Summary

  • With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, you're getting an evolutionary update in foldable smartphone technology.
  • The focus is on software features rather than new hardware, with Galaxy AI offering unique functions like sketch to image on the new devices.
  • The new lineup includes the Galaxy Watch 7, Watch Ultra, Buds 3, Buds 3 Pro, and Galaxy Ring, offering subtle updates and improvements.

Remember a few years ago when it seemed like every smartphone review was titled, "Evolution, not revolution"? Then, we started seeing phones with foldable displays, and suddenly the market was exciting again. Well, foldables are mature now, so with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, you're getting evolution.

The company launched a whole portfolio of devices today though, including the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Buds 3, and Buds 3 Pro. There's a lot that's new, but unsurprisingly, there's nothing radical going on.

Indeed, Samsung is focusing on Galaxy AI, so there's more talk about software features than the new hardware. This includes a new sketch to image feature, which lets you draw things on top of a picture, using AI to generate the thing you want. For the Galaxy Watch and Ring, it comes in the form of new sleep insights.

The big news is that the cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is three millimeters wider. The screen is a tenth of an inch larger, but the aspect ratio changes from 23.1:9 to 22.1:9, so if you're tired of that really narrow cover screen that Samsung has been using for some time, you're in luck.

This is a bigger improvement than Samsung will get credit for, given how positively the OnePlus Open (rightfully) has been received. The foldable market is more competitive than ever, with entries from not just OnePlus, but Google and Motorola as well, and all of those companies have been delivering in areas where Samsung has come up short.

Aside from new colorways, the hardware on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is mostly the same, externally. It has a 3.4-inch external display that comes with some fun new features for taking selfies. It auto-zooms now, so if you stand up the phone to take a picture and step back, it zooms into the proper frame, making adjustments for if others join in. You'll need to set a timer to take the picture, or you can tap your fingers if you're wearing the Galaxy Ring.

Flip phone foldables have never had great cameras, but this one is vastly improved. It uses the same 50MP main sensor that you'll find on the Z Fold 6, compared to the old 12MP camera that was on the Z Flip 5. It's still a dual-lens system, as it probably always will be, and the secondary lens is ultra-wide, as it should be.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 will cost $100 more than they did last year, starting at $1,899.99 and $1,099.99, respectively.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 has no surprises at all. If it's time for you to upgrade your Samsung smartwatch, then that's probably the one to get. It's pretty straightforward.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra is all-new. Samsung releases Classic and Pro watches on alternating years (it confirmed that if you want a rotating bezel, you should wait for next year's Watch 8 Classic), so while this would be a Pro year, we got the Ultra.

Much like the Apple Watch Ultra, it's designed to be bigger, sturdier, and have better battery life. Also like Apple's larger wearable, it doesn't actually do anything that the more mainstream version doesn't do. It's made out of Titanium Grade 4 and has 10ATM water resistance, so you can take this thing anywhere.

There's a Quick Button on the Ultra for going straight to workouts, and Night Mode for better usage in the dark. This all probably sounds pretty familiar.

But again, a big part of the Watch lineup is Galaxy AI. From sleep insights to detecting sleep apnea, Samsung is taking health seriously. Aside from that, Galaxy AI will analyze previous conversations to offer you suggested replies, making it easier to respond to messages without using your phone.

And then there's the Samsung Galaxy Ring. Less of a fitness tracker and more of a health monitor, it will do things like track sleep, heart rate, and more. There's a new Energy Score that uses AI to look at how your overall health affects your life. Of all of the products, this is the one I'm most excited to try out.

Indeed, smartwatches are great, but they're just not comfortable to wear all the time. Using a Galaxy Watch Ultra for sleep-tracking won't be the most pleasant experience, so the Galaxy Ring will be easier at the least.

It does track workouts automatically, although those workouts are pretty much limited to walking and running. There are no notifications or anything like that, not that you'd want a vibrating ring.

The Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra come in at $299 and $649, respectively, and the Galaxy Ring costs $399. You'll need to be sized for the Ring, so Samsung will send you a kit with some plastic rings to try on. The kit costs $10, and you'll get a credit for the full amount when you order your Galaxy Ring.

You can preorder now

All of the products announced today are available for preorder immediately. This also includes the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro, which cost $179.99 and $249.99, respectively. The new Buds have an all-new design with a triangular stem, and the Buds 3 Pro actually have lights on the side for some reason.

And yes, Galaxy AI is integrated into the Buds as well with a new Interpreter feature. This is a one-way translation feature where if you're listening to something that's in a foreign language, you'll hear it in your native language. At launch, 16 languages will be supported.

While pre-orders for everything kick off today, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will be available July 23, and the Galaxy Watch 7, Watch Ultra, Ring, Buds 3, and Buds 3 Pro will be available July 24.
