Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Everything you need to know

Every year since 2019, Samsung has introduced a new version of its Galaxy Z Fold series, and 2024 is no different. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is officially here, and it's going all-in on Galaxy AI. Of course, that's not all that's new with this year's iteration, since we also get new processors and more features for creators.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is shaping up to be the best foldable phone of the year, so let's take a look at what's new.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: Pricing and availability

Samsung officially unveiled the Samsung galaxy Z Fold 6 during its Unpacked event on July 10th, 2024, and preorders are already live. The phone is set to become fully available on July 24th, from Sasmung, Amazon, Best Buy, and major carriers.

Pricing starts at $1,899, a $100 increase compared to last year's model. However, you can upgrade the sotrage up to 1TB if you're willing to pay more.

Design and display

Focusing on refinements

If you were expecting some major changes to the way the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 looks, you may be a little disappointed this year, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is mostly about refining the design from Samsung's previous foldable, and it's now the company's thinnest foldable phone yet. It measures just 5.6mm in thickness when unfolded, and just 12.1mm when folded. By comparison, last year's Galaxy Z Fold 5 was 6.1mm thick when unfolded and 13.4mm thick when folded. That makes a huge difference for pocketability, which has always been one of the pain points of foldable phones. The phone is also slightly lighter, at 239 grams compared to last year's 253 grams.

Aside from that, it's what you've come to know and love. We have a frame made os Samsung's signature Armor Aluminum paired with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for the outer shell, while the inside display is naturaly made of plastic, so it can fold. On the outside, there's a 6.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with 2736x968 resolution, while the inner display is a 7.6-inch panel with a resolution of 2160x1856. That's a slightly larger cover screen, while the inner display has a more square-ish aspect ratio now, but overall, this is very similar to last year's model.

Performance and software

Faster than ever, with a lot of AI

Of course, every iteration of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold comes with a performance upgrade, and it's no different this year. Samsung has upgraded the chipset from last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 to the even faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, which offers a nice performance boost. Perhaps more importantly, though, Samsung has also improved the cooling, with a vapor chamber that's 60% larger than last year's to keep the processor running cool during more demanding usage scenarios.

But the bulk of the news with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 comes in the form of software features, specifically new AI capabilities. A big one is Note Assist, which can translate, summarize, and automatically format meeting notes to make them easily readable. There's also a new transcription feature that allows you to easily embed a transcription and summary of a meeting in a note.

Opening a PDF file in Samsung Notes can now automatically recognize text and translate it on the go, overlaying the translation on top of the original text so you get a natural reading experience in your language of choice. Samsung has also added a composer feature to its keyboard, so you can write a longer message based on a simple text prompt. Samsung has also added new capabilities to the Smart select feature, suggesting features like translation or adding notes when you select an element in Samsung Notes.

Finally, Sketch to image is a feature that can turn your doodles into a more professional-looking image, with different styles to choose from.

Beyond Samsung Notes, there are enhancements to the Interpreter feature, which can now show two-way translations on both the inner and outer screens, enabling easier communication between two people who speak different languages. And the Live Translate feature that can translate voice calls in real time now works beyond Samsung's own phone app and it works with some third-party apps, too.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 also comes with Google's Gemini app, which can offer assistance in different contexts. You can summon it in the same way you've summoned Google Assistant in the past, and ask questions about what you're seeing, for example. Thanks to the larer screen inside the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Gemini can give you information without taking over the entire screen, so you can keep doing what you're doing uninterrupted.

Finally, there are new features for content creation under the ProVisual Engine. One of them is Photo Assist, which offers advanced editing capabilities for your photos, and another is Portrait Studio, which can transform your images into different styles, like a 3D cartoon or watercolor painting, thanks to the power of AI. For video, Instant Slow-mo can convert your videos into slow-motion footage by generating additional frames in between the existing ones.

Cameras

No big news here

The camera setup is one area where Samsung hasn't really changed much this time around. While there are new camera-related capabilities like we just mentioned above, the hardware itself is fundamentally unchanged, That means you get a triple-camera setup on the back, including a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

The cover screen has a 10MP camea for selfies, and on the inside of the phone, a 4MP camera is hidden under the display. You probably won't be using this to snap selfies, but it's meant to be more useful for calls or meetings where you're using the larger screen.

The best foldable phone of the year (so far)

Considering Samsung has almost no competition in the foldable space outside of China, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is already looking like a winner by default. By simply having a much thinner design, it's now much closer to something like the OnePlus Open, but it has a more robust ecosystem of features and more powerful hardware. This is pretty much the first foldable to launch this year, so at least for now, it's a clear winner. We'll have to see if other companies respond in the next few months.
