Summary

  • Spotify's Prompted Playlists has launched in US and Canada — the feature creates custom AI playlists based on mood, era, genre, and more.
  • Prompted Playlists can auto-refresh daily or weekly, and each song gets an AI summary explaining why it was selected.
  • Just before the launch of this new feature, Spotify increased US subscription prices.

After launching last month in other regions, Prompted Playlists, a new Spotify feature that allows users to quickly create playlists with the help of AI, is rolling out in the US and Canada.

The premium feature lets subscribers create any playlist they can think of, whether the tracks are based on their mood, a mid-2000s emo-focused collection of songs, a bunch of early 1990s rap tracks, or even several genres combined. Prompted Playlists can handle pretty much any parameter you throw at it with conversational prompts.

In a recent press release, Spotify offers up an ultra-specific, sort of wild example: "mood-boosting indie-pop for getting ready to go out with friends including songs recently featured on hit competitions and reality shows that fit my taste, along with songs I love but haven’t played this year." While this is a pretty funny prompt, you don't really need to be this specific to get a decent playlist.

The new subscription gives you access to Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, and more for $13 per month.

If your Spotify playlist feels stale, Prompted Playlists help add variety to the mix

As far as in-app AI goes, this is a pretty great use case

You can set Playlists created with Prompted Playlists to refresh on a daily or weekly basis, so you won't get bored with listening to the same songs. Each song also includes an AI-generated summary related to why it was added to your custom playlist.

I can see myself using this feature to catch up on tracks from artists I haven't listened to in a few years, or to create specific playlists that better capture my varied taste in music. I tested Prompted Playlists a few times and while it took a couple of minutes to pull together the AI-generated playlist, it worked pretty well and its song selections made sense in the context of my prompts.

To find Spotify's Prompted Playlist option, follow these steps:

  1. Open Spotify and tap Create, then select Prompted Playlist.
  2. Next, describe what you want to hear, whether it's a specific era, genre, or mood.
  3. Spotify then generates a playlist from this idea.
