Finding files swiftly and efficiently is essential for productivity, but Windows Search doesn't always cut it. Thankfully, there’s a variety of third-party tools that outperform Windows Search in speed, features, and user experience. Here are the tools I use to supercharge my file searches on Windows 11.

The best part is that you can use it whether you’re a beginner or an advanced user, thanks to its minimalist interface. However, if you’re a power user, Everything offers advanced search syntax, enabling targeted queries based on file types, sizes, and modification dates.

Moreover, unlike Windows Search, the tool utilizes minimal system resources, ensuring it won’t slow down your system while performing a simple search.

Launcher and search, all in one tool

If you’re looking for smarter file navigation, Listary might be the free tool you’re looking for. It features File Explorer integration, and its standout feature is its instant search capability. Just start typing while in any folder, and Listary will display matching files and folders within seconds.

It supports wildcard searches, and it allows you to customize commands for repetitive tasks. One of its best features is the Quick Switch feature, which allows you to effortlessly jump between open directories without losing context.

Beyond file searches, Listary also acts as a launcher. That means you can open files, folders, or applications directly from its command bar. If you’re tired of endlessly scrolling through directories to locate files, Listary is great to simplify and speed up your workflow.

3 DocFetcher

DocFetcher is an open-source tool that goes beyond filenames to index the contents of text files. It supports popular file formats such as PDFs, Word documents, and text files, and allows you to locate specific content quickly. The best part is that it includes advanced filtering options to provide search results based on keywords or phrases. In other words, it also looks into the documents themselves to find your results.

However, it’s not that straightforward to use. First, you have to create indexes of the folders you want to search through. While it works really fast for documents, when I tried indexing a folder with several gigabytes of .mp3 files, that process took a couple of hours. Although after creating the indexes I needed, it gave me almost instant results for searches.

2 SearchMyFiles

SearchMyFiles is a highly customizable file search tool that offers an array of advanced filters. You can specify parameters such as file attributes, creation and modification dates, access dates, size ranges, and even text within files.

The best thing you will love about SearchMyFiles is that you can use it to find duplicate files. That means it helps you get rid of redundant copies of your files and free up some much-needed storage space. The tool is portable, so you can run it without installation. You just copy it onto a USB stick and use it on another system seamlessly. The cherry on top for SearchMyFiles is its user-friendly interface. That makes it accessible to both casual and advanced users.

Simple and efficient for everyone

FileSeek is a great file search tool whether you want to perform complex search tasks, or just find that photo that is somewhere on your drive. First of all, it can also search for file contents, not just filenames, which can be extremely useful if you’re a coder or dealing with text-heavy files.

However, FileSeek truly shines when it comes to advanced search. You can define search parameters such as file size, date range, and even exclude certain file types or directories to streamline search results.

Additionally, it offers search profiles to save commonly used configurations for quick access later. I also want to mention that when you install FileSeek, you will be prompted to enter a 30-day trial version, after which it will revert to the free version. This might be a deal-breaker, but it’s still worth trying.

Windows Search, although built-in and easy to use, often feels slow, lacks customization options, and struggles with complex search queries.
