Windows OS vs macOS — the never-ending battle that's been going on for decades with passionate advocates on both sides trying to prove their client is superior. But, if we think rationally, is macOS really superior to Windows? Well, in some cases, probably yes, like in sleek design or a seamless ecosystem, battery life, build quality, and more, but Windows continues to be a preferred choice for millions of users. And gone are the days when it was majorly due to affordability. The modern Windows OS offers many advantages, making it a better option for most users.
Let's discuss some key reasons why Windows remains the top choice for everyday users, professionals, and gamers alike.
6 Better customization and upgradability
Windows lets you make your PC truly yours
One of the biggest flexes Windows users enjoy is the ability to customize or upgrade their system to their liking using built-in options and third-party tools. While Apple tightly binds macOS, Windows users can personalize most aspects by tweaking registries and making system-level changes through apps. Basically, Windows gives you the freedom to make your PC truly yours.
Next, when it comes to hardware, Windows PCs are far more upgradeable. In many cases, you can easily replace components like RAM, storage, and even the GPU. This lets you keep your computer system up-to-date without purchasing a whole new one. For example, last year, when I felt my PC was slowing down, I upgraded the RAM and switched to an SSD, making it smooth again without spending much.
Macs are almost impossible to upgrade, even the desktop versions like the Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Studio, or Mac Pro. All of them have soldered components, making it nearly impossible to replace them. Though Macs are built pretty robustly compared to any Windows-based PC or laptop, the lack of customization can be frustrating for users who like to keep upgrading their PCs based on the latest advancements.
5 Vast software compatibility
Windows works with almost everything
Windows is the most popular desktop OS, and its widespread popularity means software developers are inclined towards creating more Windows-specific apps. This makes Windows compatible with a vast collection of software that macOS isn't. Whether you're looking for productivity tools, creative software, or niche applications, there's a high chance you'll get a Windows version.
macOS isn't that bad when it comes to software collection, and in the last decade or so, developers have started launching their apps for Windows and macOS side-by-side, but you'll still find many essential apps that are only Windows-specific. macOS also lacks the varieties and alternatives of the apps that Windows has.
4 Superior Gaming Support
Windows is the ultimate platform for gamers.
Even a hardcore macOS fan becomes mute when the topic of gaming comes into the debate of macOS vs. Windows. Windows is clearly a winner and miles ahead. Windows OS is actually one of the biggest reasons for the boom in the gaming industry. It supports a massive library of games, including titles from major publications like Rockstar and Electronic Arts and also from small indie developers. DirectX, Microsoft's graphics API, is the industry standard for gaming, ensuring that most games are optimized for Windows. Most PC games are developed only with Windows in mind, and platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox Game Pass primarily focus on Windows users.
Apart from that, Windows also supports a range of gaming hardware, like high-end GPUs and VR headsets. macOS isn't fully deprived of gaming; you will find many games on it as well, but due to its lack of compatible hardware and software support, you cannot even imagine playing a AAA game on a Mac.
Windows 11 will always be the best OS for gamers, no matter how hard Apple tries
It seems obvious, but Windows 11 is a fantastic OS for gamers, even though it has its problems.
3 Better and affordable hardware
Windows supports a variety of hardware components and devices
One of the best things about Windows is that it's not hardware-bound like macOS. It's compatible with possibly all PC hardware. You can run it on a budget-friendly laptop, a high-end gaming rig, or even on your custom-built workstation. macOS is only compatible with Apple-based devices.
Other than that, Apple's MacBooks are pretty expensive compared to many high-end Windows devices. Yes, Apple devices are superior in build quality, design, and support, but prices are too high if you are looking for something on a budget. On the other hand, Windows devices are affordable and cater to every type of user, from a student looking for a budget option to a professional graphic designer looking for a high-performing workstation. Unlike macOS, you have the freedom to choose the manufacturer that matches your expectations and your budget.
2 Easier Repairs and Maintenance
Windows devices are easier to fix, upgrade, and maintain.
IMacs and MacBooks are well known for their tightly integrated hardware. This makes repairs difficult and comparatively expensive, especially if the device is out of warranty and you don't have AppleCare. Sometimes, the repair can take an unusually long time because certain parts are unavailable at the service center. You don't have an option to replace hardware from an unauthorized brand.
Conversely, most Windows laptops allow you to replace faulty components, like batteries, RAM, or storage drives. You have the flexibility to purchase RAM, storage, and some other components from brands other than your laptop. If something goes wrong with Windows devices, the replacement parts are widely available and quite affordable compared to Apple components.
1 Better support for power users
Users have more freedom on Windows
This is debatable, but in my experience, Windows offers a better open environment than macOS. If you are a developer, coder, or IT pro, you can run complex apps, modify system settings, and easily install a secondary operating system if and when required. With features like Command Prompt, Registry Editor, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and more, you have advanced control over the system.
macOS is not far behind in this; in fact, most coders prefer it for its comparatively high performance and long battery life. It also allows you to install a secondary OS via apps like Parallels through VM and use Terminal to run advanced commands for system management. But overall, you won't have much control over your device like you have on Windows.
Windows vs macOS? I choose Windows
There are many reasons why macOS has a huge fan following. It offers an unmatched user experience and has other strengths, but Windows is still a better choice for most people. This is mainly due to its comparatively open environment and the freedom to select the hardware device of your own choice depending on your use case (casual use, educational purpose, hardcore gaming, coding, professional work, and more). Windows does have its problems, but if you're looking for a platform that combines power, versatility, and value, it's a clear winner.
