India ranks among the world's top three suppliers of maritime personnel, with 3,07,901 Indian seafarers serving across merchant vessels globally in 2024.
From container ships, bulk carriers and oil tankers to LNG carriers, cruise liners and offshore support vessels, Indian ry major segment of the global shipping industry.
According to official data, the workforce includes 1,10,416 officers and 1,97,485 non-officers, spanning engineering, navigation, hospitality and deck operations.
During the recent conflict in the Gulf region, 13 India-flagged vessels carrying nearly 550 Indian sailors remained stranded in the Strait of Hormuz for over 100 days, while more than 18,000 Indian seafarers faced uncertainty across the region.
