Today Trump's USDA nominee, Brooke Rollins, told Congress that she will force states to allow the sale of pork from crated pigs.
States banned these sales to stop animal cruelty. The conservative Supreme Court upheld those bans.
Only pork industry lobbyists want this change.

- Progress: France bans killing day-old chicks, sparing 50 million chicks annually! The alternative, in ovo sexing, has "an extra cost of 1 euro cent per box of six eggs." If the rest of the world adopts it, we could spare seven billion more chicks.France bans crushing and gassing of male chicks from 2022 reut.rs/2UnIoo2
- This isnβt just about Rollins. Itβs part of a bigger pork industry plan to force all states to legalize crates. Their plan is to do this through the giant Farm Bill, where no one will notice. Their leaders are Senators Boozman, Ernst, and Marshall. They must be stopped.Today Trump's USDA nominee, Brooke Rollins, told Congress that she will force states to allow the sale of pork from crated pigs. States banned these sales to stop animal cruelty. - This week, nearly 1,000 pigs burned alive in a North Carolina factory farm that had no sprinklers. Also this week: the pork industry appealed a new rule that requires them to install sprinklers in their barns. They said it's too expensive. - Huge win! The Supreme Court just upheld Californiaβs Prop 12, the nationβs strongest farm animal welfare law. This ruling spares millions of animals from crates and sets a powerful precedent that could help many more. More details β¬οΈ supremecourt.gov/opinions/22pdfβ¦
- In 2010, the world's top chicken breeder tested restricting birds' sleep from 7 to 4 hours per night. The change doubled mortality and hurt every welfare metric. But it increased weight gain. Today almost all chickens are only allowed 4 hours of sleep. en.aviagen.com/assets/Tech_Ceβ¦
- Thank you to everyone who has shared my TED talk on factory farming! Thanks to you the talk hit 235K views in its first week online. Hopefully one small step in breaking the cone of silence that protects factory farming's horrors.
- This is appalling. Itβs also near identical to most US pig factories. The only innovation is multi-stories. The crates were invented here in the US. We need to end them here too.Their pig factories really are nightmarish
- Years ago I was shocked by images like this of Korean farmers burying pigs alive during an FMD outbreak. Right now, US egg factory farms are killing millions of animals by an even crueler method: baking them alive. Brooke Rollins could end this with the stroke of a pen.Over 100 million US birds have now been killed to stop the spread of bird flu, including 15M in the last month. They've been killed by perhaps the most inhumane method ever invented. And we have the federal government -- and our taxes -- to thank for it...
- In ancient Rome, unfaithful Vestal Virgins were locked alive in coffins with just enough bread and water to prolong their deaths. In US factory farms today, pigs are locked in coffin-sized crates with just enough food and water to prolong their deaths. Surely we can do better.
- Really bad news: DOJ just filed a brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn CAβs ban on the sale of pork from crated pigs. The Biden Administration is siding with the pork industry in defending one of the most extreme forms of farm animal cruelty. supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/21/2β¦
- Not all meat is equal in the animal suffering it creates. A surprisingly good predictor of the suffering footprint of meat is its color. The lighter the meat, the worse the intensity and duration of suffering behind it. This is true for three separate reasons...
- The new cabinet will likely contain more animal welfare advocates than any prior cabinet: - @PamBondi championed a federal anti-cruelty bill and a ban on greyhound racing in Florida - @TulsiGabbard is an ethical vegan who championed an anti-factory farming bill in Congress -
