As Europe wakes up to US election result it is important to avoid 2 big traps: panic & denial. one, states concerned about their security panicking & rushing to DC try to cut special bilateral deals. The other is not to take Trump seriously & not to prepare for a new world. 1/

- A post-American Germany? Incredible statistic that shows how one of the most Atlanticist states in Europe is moving towards supporting strategic autonomy for the EUYouโre unable to view this Post because this account owner limits who can view their Posts. Learn more
- Norbert Roettgen, ECFRโs co-chair, has written a German answer to Macron in the FAZ and Le Monde and its really worth reading. Thread below.1/13Der ๐ซ๐ท Prรคsident Macron hat in den letzten Jahren die wichtigen strategischen Fragen unserer Zeit ins Zentrum der ๐ช๐บ Debatte gebracht. #Europa kann nicht so weitermachen wie bisher. - A lot has been written about Trumpโs legacy โ but in a new @ecfr report launched today by Ivan Krastev & myself we reveal radical lessons Europeans have drawn, what it means for European govts & the #Biden team as they build a new basis for cooperation. buff.ly/3oXcLvs
- Thanks for the beautiful messages for my 50th Bday. The world is in crisis but the love & kindness of family & friends means I look to the next 50 with energy, determination & hope. One small request: can you tell me about ONE book I should read to inspire me on that journey?
- Lots of confusion and head-scratching in Europe about how to prepare for @realDonaldTrump following his @JDVance1 pick. At ECFR we have been thinking about this for a long time. Thread ๐ 1/8

- We had a fascinating dinner to launch the @ecfr Washington office. A big thanks to @JakeSullivan46 for joining us and to @UrbanAhlin for hosting us at the Fabulous Swedish Embassy.
- Very important piece by my colleague @jana_puglierin and @ClaudMajor on how west is sleepwalking into Ukraine defeat after ๐บ๐ธ election. They lay out strategy to reframe security debate to prevent Kyiv from being forced to settle on Russian terms.
- Devastating critique of EU. You can add our increasing struggles to set a path on climate, China & regulations. Striking to see countries like Tรผrkiye desperate to go to sco & Brics but sitting out the EPC meeting. We need some serious rethinking about EU foreign policyEvents in Israel make clear the EU's impotence & inability to shape world around it. Irrelevant in Mid-East. Can't backfill US mil support if Ukr funding dries up. Can't sort Nagorno-Karabakh. Losing the Global South Didn't @vonderleyen want to run a Geopolitical @EU_Commission?
- Is Donald Trump leading a double life? For my โฆ@FTโฉ piece I talked to Chinaโs foreign policy elite & where Europeans only see chaos and unpredictability in trump, Beijing sees grand strategy and shrewd tactics. Reveals as much about China as USA!
- Impressive speech by @ABaerbock st UN who is rapidly establishing herself as one of the most impressive European foreign ministers - showing moral authority, action and strength. This really is s turning point for German foreign policy.@GermanyUN's Foreign Minister @ABaerbock just gave one of the best speeches at the UN General Assembly Emergency Special Session on #Ukraine
