Errata

From Yugipedia
(Redirected from Erratum)
Jump to: navigation, search

Errata (Japanese: エラッタ Eratta) are changes to any part of the text of a card (other than Card Number) that occur between reprints or on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Database.

Errata can be made to a card for a variety of reasons, including to fix mistakes, to update a card's terminology, or to clarify the behavior of a card so that its rulings are easier to understand (such as Problem-Solving Card Text). Some errata specifically modify the card's functionality itself, usually as a way to make the card less powerful in order to remove it from the Forbidden list.

Players are not required to own the most recent erratum of a card, but they must always be played according to the latest erratum even if using an older copy of the card. Konami recommends using the most recent printing of a card, because that text is the most accurate.[1]

Some examples of errata are listed below.

Card text[edit]

Including or excluding cards for an archetype[edit]

This is done when changing the card's name is undesirable, as with iconic cards from the anime.[2]

Original First erratum

Clarification[edit]

When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, inflict 500 points of Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points. You can also take from your Deck and Special Summon them to the field in face-up Attack Position. The Deck is then shuffled. When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, inflict 500 points of damage to your opponent's Life Points. You can also Special Summon from your Deck to your side of the field in face-up Attack Position. Then shuffle your Deck.

The first errata in the OCG made to "Sangan", "Witch of the Black Forest", and "Last Will" (specifying that a monster had to be sent from the field to the Graveyard, not just sent to the Graveyard) also arguably fall under this category, instead of being power-level errata.

For example, "Sangan" and "Witch of the Black Forest" (OCG release 18 November 1999) appeared in a rulings page in the 20 December 1999 issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine (with the original text of "Sangan" shown), with an explanation stating that they must be sent from the field to the Graveyard. This predates their 22 February 2001 reprint with changed text.

Other clarification-like rulings on the same magazine page include an explanation that "De-Spell" may check face-down cards (its translated original text only read "Destroy 1 Spell Card that is on the field.")

Major mechanical changes[edit]

Cards can receive errata that make major mechanical changes to their effects, rather than simply having errors or consistency corrected. A large majority of such cards were Forbidden at the time of the erratum, weakening them enough so that they no longer needed to be Forbidden.[3][4] This is the most extreme action that can apply to the status of a card, as the old version of the effect becomes 'banned' even from events that would normally allow Forbidden cards, such as Traditional Format, Genesys, Time Travel events in Master Duel, and unlockable/obtainable Forbidden cards in video games.

Players with cards that have the old text of these cards may still use them, treated as if they have the new text; however, the rules require notifying their opponent about the erratum (such as by having a printout of the Card Database entry available).[5]

Minor mechanical changes[edit]

Some cards not on the official list of major mechanical changes have also received functional changes. The only thing officially distinguishing this category from the above is the cited list on the Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG site.

The original OCG version of "Toon World" also received a significant functional erratum prior to its TCG release. It is not on the official list, which began in 2014.
