Synonym Cutey Honey, Cutey Honey 73, Милашка Хани
Short CH
The 16-year-old Kisaragi Honey is not your typical Japanese teenager. She has a penchant for getting into trouble and being both naughty and nice. One day her carefree life is suddenly rocked when she receives an odd message from her father. Rushing to his laboratory, Honey finds her father murdered. The perpetrators are agents of the evil organization called Panther Claw. They are after Prof. Kisaragi's invention — the Air Matter Transmutation System. Honey fights off Panther Claw and finds the consciousness of her father alive within a robot facsimile.

Prof. Kisaragi shockingly reveals to Honey that she is herself a cyborg which he had created, having built her to be the perfect android, capable of human emotion as well as independent thought. To this end he had raised her as he would a human daughter. The professor had also placed the Air Matter Transmutation System into her body. Using its powers, Honey is able to change into different personae, the most powerful of which is the spicy redhead "Cutey" Honey.

Honey vows to avenge her father's death and wages a personal war against Panther Claw. She is aided (hampered) in her battles by the Hayami Clan consisting of brothers Seiji and Junpei, and their perpetually "horny" father, Danbei.

This anime is yet another brainchild of Go Nagai. Yes, that guy again. I have already mentioned how awesome he was for making the (then original) Mazinger Z and the not-so-good in the anime version Devilman. I also said how he liked nude and erotism and this is a fine example of how far out he was for his time. Cutey Honey is actually the first multi-genre anime, as it combines several genres that up to then could never be seen together. First of all, the story is following the archetypical sci-fi of that era. The protagonist is a robot made by a good scientist who was killed by his other evil creations and who now seeks revenge against their evil organization while trying to live a normal life. One could easily go back and see how Osamu Tezuka’s Tetsuwan Atom had a similar story (Atom was a robot boy who wanted acceptance by his father and the world in general), combined with the story of Tetsujin 28 and Mazinger Z (the lead robot’s creator was killed by an evil organization). If I stretch it even further I could even say that it is very similar to Shotaro Ishinomori’s Cyborg 009 (people turned into cyborgs and fighting the evil organization that did that to them). I didn’t review the last title by the way; it was way too simplistic and Kamen Rider owns it anyway.

So one would think that this anime is just another rehash of previous titles and nothing more. I mean, back then there was a really narrow variety at what such stories would be about and nobody minded as the target audience was just a few thousand underage kids. But then again it’s Nagai we are talking about here; the dude who loved to take other people’s premises and making his own version with 300% more nude and violence. So just guess what he did here…

The first thing you will notice is that the main hero is a … girl. And not just a girl but a GODDAMN HALF-NAKED SEXBOMB WHO UNDRESSES EVERY HALF AN HOUR. Before one starts accusing me of how this is not original at all, he should first look at the year the anime was made. He will then realize that SUCH THINGS DIDN’T EXIST YET. Cutey Honey is historically the first anime babe, created solely for males to drool all over her. And if that is not enough please notice how she is A GIRL HERO IN AN ACTION SERIES, which again was unthinkable back then as action and robots automatically meant an almost all-male cast with a few girls in the background… which stands true for almost all shounen series even today. Yes, I know how we have Ikki Tousen, Queen’s Blade and lots of other brain dead action anime with busty chicks fighting each other. The thing is, Cutey Honey did all that 30 FREAKING YEARS PRIOR and no other series managed to be as successful or as famous as it is up until the early 2000’s and only because the newer generation had no idea of such an old show existing.

The similarities to other shows don’t even end here. No sir, I just mentioned the allusions to other scenarios and not to aesthetics. So once again, Cutey Honey uses henshin to transform to her battle form and fights with martial arts. Does that remind you of something I already mentioned before? Yup, it’s just like Gatchaman! , masked heroes transforming and fighting a criminal organization with martial arts. Another allusion is the minions of the villains, who are an endless army of identical masked gangsters with Tommy guns. One could again say how Gatchaman did the same and I can even add how their looks are a tribute to the ones in Tetsujin 28 (Nagai loved that show).

But again, one could reject all these details and just say that Cutey Honey simply ripped off elements from other anime and not even the ones I specifically mention. I mean all super sentai shows had endless identical goons and there already were dozens of other minor action shows with masked heroes fighting crime with henshin and martial arts. Well, once again I must remind you that we are talking about Go Nagai here, the dude blah, blah, more nude and violence, blah, blah. I ensure you that besides those similarities, this anime is also FAR MORE VIOLENT. Whereas in Gatchaman and in any other show the heroes would mostly try to incapacitate their opponents, Cutey Honey had no qualms of killing them while smiling at the camera. Plus, her Zorro-like sword finishing move was practically slicing its victims in pieces before they evaporate or just blow up. So ok, in reality all the bad guys in the show are robots and don’t exactly count as killed since they never were alive to begin with. But they look and act human enough to fool you of that detail and the specifics are hidden from the viewer for most of the show. Which is again another thing that makes the show great; most shows would rush to make clear from the pilot episode that the heroes are not killing humans but soulless robots. But Cutey Honey actually does the opposite! Oh Nagai, you little rascal…

And no, I haven’t even finished the comparisons. One who watches the anime would feel that the show is closer to a girly mahou shoujo genre than to the manly action shounen. I mean Honey loses her clothes while transforming, poses weird while her new uniform appears, changes hairstyle and does not hide her face under a mask, plus has her own catchphrase (I WILL CHANGE!) and even taunts the villains, most of which are women in a fashion that is … well … very Sailor Moon. So it is actually very ironic how most remember Sailor Moon to be the show that began the trend when in reality it was Cutey Honey, 20 years prior… which was also far more erotic, far more violent and actually aimed at boys rather than girls. See how ahead of its time this show is? It actually deconstructed the genre before even anyone knew what the genre was in the first place! Its elements seem to fit in the era AFTER Sailor Moon and be some sort of parody of it when in reality Sailor Moon is nothing but its watered down tribute. Head explodes…

Before I move on I must point out that Cutey Honey is NOT the first mahou shoujo show. That title belongs to Mahou Tsukai Sally made in 1968, another anime I didn’t bother to review because I never watched it and because it looks frakking boring and simplistic.

Another thing that I can say about the show is that even its characters are WAY TOO FAR OUT for their time. Imagine an ugly lesbian female teacher stalking and hitting on her and a male news reporter who keeps bumping on her in very private moments. Imagine how all underlings in the show besides the foot soldiers are women with weird animal themed bodies and very, very, very, MUSCULAR body types. Heck, most of them look like brute men with a female head, which is again a very original and cool aspect of the show. Another thing about them is their ulterior motives. Cutey doesn’t JUST want to take revenge or save the world. In fact, I could even say those are secondary to her having fun. Because she is a sexbomb who loves to party and run around in her motorcycle and play pranks on people just like any teenager in the peak of her life. And the villains, lol, they don’t even want to rule the world or resurrect some arch demon to the most part. They just want to … have money. I mean really, they see something shiny and expensive and they rush to steal it, as if it’s all driven by female vanity for jewels and furs. Isn’t that just awesome?

Yet another great part of the show are the actual battle scenes, which to the most part are very exciting. They have good choreography for their time and unlike the dried up battles in Devilman, which were mostly him flying and throwing energy beams at ugly demons, here Cutey Honey constantly needs to perform all sorts of acrobatics around the area she fights, use the terrain at her advantage and finish the enemies, which are hilarious looking muscular animal-themed women, with hand-to-hand brawling and swordsmanship. That’s right, she doesn’t vaporize them with rainbows coming out of magic staves, which is again awesome.

Yet ANOTHER great thing about the show is the main music theme, which is also hilarious to watch again and again with its perkiness motions, erotic innuendoes and funky lyrics. It is so awesome not even its remakes dared to make a different one. As for the dialogues, well, cheese aside they are full of erotic humor and perkiness which again keeps you from being bored with the otherwise episodic to the most part show.

And YET ANOTHER FOR ONE MORE GODDAMN TIME is Cutey’s form or energy reserves. She constantly needs to eat a lot in order to fill her batteries and not plug herself to a some electric outlet. Also, as her power lowers, her clothes disappear and at her weakest form she is but naked! Nothing alike the “clothes-make-of-rice-paper” trope all fan service show have today.

And now some info about its remakes. There is a live action version which I haven’t watched to say anything and a 90’s version simply titled Cutey Honey F. The F in the title stands for FAKIN’ TERRIBLE and this version is to be shot in public, along with the ones who made it. If you want to see how this awesome show can turn to a mediocrity then go watch that piece of turd. They took out the nude, the death, the violence and made it into a far dumber and completely boring Sailor Moon imitator aimed for 5 year old girls. MAY IT BURN IN HELL!!!

Thankfully they figured out their mistake and made another version in the early 2000’s titled RE: Cutey Honey. NOW THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT! Although it doesn’t last too much and the story has the characters in different roles, the action and the feeling are left intact and combined with the brand new visuals of our time make that one a completely worthy tribute and remake. But you better watch some of the original first because it packs many in-jokes that prior knowledge is somewhat needed to fully appreciate it.

So yeah, I loved this oldie despite its lack of actual plot and monster of the week format. It was decades away from its time and I sometimes think if Nagai went to the future, saw how things are today, and went back to make it as it is.
Head explodes…

Cutey Honey - The original action magical girl series that's greater that the sum of it's parts

Note that at the time of writing this, I have only seen up to episode 14 (and thus as far as this review applies), which is as far as the series has been subbed in English, and it doesn't look like the rest will be coming anytime soon. The project has stalled because the group that has been subbing CH into English, Spork, is in need of a translator. If you know anybody can help them out, please let them know, as this is an anime that definitely needs to be completed. That being said, I will update this review should those other episodes every come out.

For those that don't know Cutey Honey's historical significance, allow me to enlighten you. Cutey Honey was originally conceived by Go Nagai (whose work includes Devilman and Mazinger-Z) as a fairly typical mahō shōjo (magical girl) series. However, instead of being given a time slot typical of magical girl series, it was instead given a shōnen (young boys') series time slot, making it the first magical girl series aimed at young boys, and thus the series was retooled to be more violent and Nagai decided to alter his transformation sequence idea to show Honey nude during it. That's right, Cutey Honey was the first magical girl series to feature a transformation sequence, although it was fairly tame by some of the sequences that one can see today. Now, on with the review.

Animation - 7/10
Fairly well done animation by 1970s standards, although you can tell that they put priority on some scenes over others. Most crowd scenes for example are underwhelming and a bit too static to be acceptable, but they instead put their efforts into the fight scenes, which do turn out nicely, if a bit hampered by the 1970s view of the possibilities surrounding superhuman fights.

Sound - 8/10
For the most part the sound is your average 1970s fair, but there are two things that stand out as above average.

The first is voice actress Eiko Masuyama's work as the heroine Honey, which stands above the other voices in series, most of which are just played for laughs, and brings Honey to life. Lines that might otherwise come off as cheesy are handled seriously, which adds a legitimacy to Honey. You may recognize her name for being the voice of Fujiko Mine in the majority of the works in the Lupin III series.

The second is the show's theme song, is a catchy disco pop number which has been used as the theme to every incarnation of the series, which, according to Wikipedia, makes it the third longest continually used anime theme song after the GeGeGe no Kitaro and Lupin III series. Here's a YouTube link for the opening with English subs (http://youtube.com/watch?v=cUO2_helmeo&feature=related). The theme also gets used as background music on occasion, most notably when they slow the melody down and use it for the more serious moments.

Story - 7/10
The story starts off rather suddenly, with the Honey quickly progressing from finding her father dead, discovering she's an android, and swearing to kill every member of Panther Claw for the afor mentioned father with her new found powers. From there, the first couple of episodes keep to a villain-of-the-week formula, with Panther Claw going after some highly valuable object and Honey thwarting them by killing every Panther Claw she comes across. And she out right kills them, often stabbing that weeks baddie right through the chest as a finishing move. One memorable scene is in episode 3 where Honey, dressed as , goes about Panther Claw grunts . Awesome.

Pacing and direction are fairly well maintained, with the exception of the occasional bit where things get sped along to move things along to the fight scene, but other than that things are keep within the standard.

Now, during the course of these first few episodes, while the plots are generally standard stuff, Panther Claw does learn bits and pieces about Honey's true identity, although nothing ever seems to come from this, until the game changing episode 14, where in which
Panther Claw's Japan branch head Sister Jill comes to Honey's boarding school, kills her best friend, blows up the school and seriously injures some of the teachers.
I was not expecting the series to take this turn, and keep to its villain-of-the-week formula until the end, but I welcome this turn and the potential this holds. Now, this is as far as I've seen at this point, but the preview for next episode seems to suggest that both sides will get more serious and up their efforts to defeat the other, which has greatly increased my interest in how the series plays out, and makes up for the earlier generic plot episodes, nut I'm hesitant to score story higher until I've seen these episodes.

Character - 6/10
Character designs were created by Shingo Araki (who was also animation director) and Go Nagai, and I should note that Nagai reuses some designs and characters from some of his previous works, particularly from his manga Abashiri Family, which did get an anime release in the early 90s. I'd also like to know why he gave Miss Alphonne, one of Honey's teachers who is infatuated with Honey, a mustache. I strikes me as such an odd thing do.

At any rate, the characters usually come in one of two designs: a more realistic and serious design, like Honey and her confidant/reporter Seiji Hayami; or a more cartoony still, like those of Miss Alphonne or Danbei Hayami, Seiji's father, which will let you know right away what kind of characteristics they will have. The cartoony characters are used mostly for comedic effect, such as Danbei trying his best to take on Panther Claw grunts and either being quickly outmatched or succeeding through luck, while the more realistic characters are generally more competent in their actions, such as Seiji managing to take on some grunts for a while until simply being outnumbered and taken captive or retreating. The trouble is that for the most part the characters, with the exception of Honey, are rather 2D and have simple motivations, but this may change after episode 14.

I should also make note of the villain of the week characters. They are for the most part 1 dimensional, with the simple goals of "Steal X" and/or "Kill Honey". The sole exception to this is episode 12, where the villain is given an actual back story and rather interesting motivation, but I felt that they didn't use this character as best they could, and thus limited the episode by keeping to their standard formula, which is a shame because the episode gives a glimpse at the potential of the series. I hope that this potential gets realized in the rest of the series. Also, the information that Panther Claw's operatives are all androids could have been shared sooner than this episode. Makes the whole "grunts vanish when defeated" thing easier to understand.

Also, while I'm taking about the VotW, even though most have generic powers and names, any show that can sell a villain whose powers include being able to grow super strong arms from her breast as plausible and nothing out of the ordinary for the hero deserves some note.

Value - 7/10
Cutey Honey has some important historic value, as mentioned above, and a theme that has been used in all incarnations of the show, as well as having popped up in a few other shows and been covered by a number of band and singers makes this one of those culturally significant animes, at least in Japan, and is considered a classic by some. I can't say more on the show's value until I've seen the complete series, but the show looks to become more serial and less episodic, which I hope will be beneficial to the show.

Enjoyment - 8/10
The first dozen episodes are rather generic VotW episodes, but are enjoyable for there classic 70s style, and I fell are a good reflection of what shōnen anime was like at the time, although if the translations had only included them, I might have only scored this section 7/10, and story 6/10.

The 12 and 14 episodes, as I've already noted, are the high points of what I've seen so far, and shows the series as being able to become more than what it started out as. I wish the rest of the series was translated so I could see how it ends and give a definitive score for the series as a whole rather than just the first half, but there's not much I can do about that.

I recommend you give this show a chance, as it had a fair amount of impact on shows that came after it, and it always helps to know what walked before to greater appreciate what came later.

clever (1)A clever or smart person is generally understood as having broad knowledge and the sharpness of mind required to put that knowledge to good use, especially when applying rational thought to long-reaching decisions, with the broad knowledge leaning more on the smart side and the sharp mind on the clever side. Unlike a genius, the clever person may be skilled, but only mundanely so, and in contrast to a cunning person, a clever person is not characterized by being sly or apt at surreptitiousness.disguising (1)Disguising is the ability to convincingly change one`s own or someone else`s appearance in order to hide one`s identity or assume another. Someone who has mastered this ability to any degree can put up disguises that are able to fool others; if nobody is fooled by the disguise, the person isn`t able to do it.leadership (1)The ability to lead skillfully.

staff (1)no description setsunglasses (1)A form of protective eye-wear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight from damaging or discomforting the eyes. Also used as a fashion detail. For practical tagging purposes, sunglasses should not be considered glasses; apply only the "sunglasses" tag for sunglasses, not both. However, a character who wears prescription glasses with dark lenses or who wears both eyewear types should take both tags.whip (1)A whip is a tool designed to strike animals or people to aid guidance or exert control over them through pain compliance or fear of pain, though they can be used without pain as additional pressure aid or visual directional cue in equestrianism. Whips can be either firm and more precise or flexible and more powerful; some, such as hunting whips, combine a firm handle and a flexible lash. Most are designed for use on animals, but some were specifically developed for flagellation of human targets.

choker (1)A choker is a necklace, narrow strip of cloth, ribbon, or other object that fits very closely around the neck. It is not to be confused with a collar, which, for humans and other human-like entities, is generally a collar-like accessory serving a restraint, identification, and/or display of submissiveness usage. Please see the description of the collar tag for more information on the distinction. Please also see this tag`s full description for other information on how to use it.earring (1)An earring is a piece of jewellery attached to the ear via a piercing in the earlobe or another external part of the ear (except in the case of clip earrings, which clip onto the lobe). absolute cleavage (2)An absolute cleavage is a complete exposure of the separation between a woman`s breasts by an article of clothing; aside from narrow strings of fabric to hold the piece of clothing together, the view of the cleavage is otherwise fully unobstructed. Complete exposure of breasts doesn`t count;, e.g. topless or wearing guimpe without a dress. Bikinis and other similar items also do not count.bishoujo (1)In the West, bishoujo are attractive girls generally from late childhood or early adolescence to late adolescence, especially those that appeal to males, and particularly fictional characters designed in a way traditionally associated to shoujo manga. Please also see this tag`s full description for other information on how to use it., friendlyA friendly person is generally considered warm, approachable and easy to relate with in character., hairbandA hairband is a flexible plastic or metal band or strip of cloth worn over the top of the head to hold the hair back and maintain a certain hairstyle. A hairband that includes ribbons or has bows along its length should be also tagged hair ribbon. For a similar band worn across the forehead primarily for athletic purposes, see sweatband., large breastsLarge breasts are breasts a fair notch larger than average, as found in some real life adolescent girls or fully grown women. They are bigger than medium breasts and smaller than huge breasts. Note: This tag has many anime/character entries that need to be moved to the new medium and huge breasts tags. Please add the appropriate tag and remove this one from the corresponding anime/character afterwards., leadershipThe ability to lead skillfully., level-headedA steady character who shows good judgment skills., long hairLong hair is hair from (but not including) shoulder-length, up to (but not including) waist length hair. Sidelocks do NOT count as long hair., necklaceno description set

secondary cast
episode appearance appears in ep: 1-2
female, carefreeA carefree person is free of worries, cares or concerns. This does not necessarily imply that they have no responsibilities or are negligent towards them; they are simply able to live out their lives in tranquility regardless of what happens., denseThis character is slow at picking up obvious things/hints. Usually requires direct and simple/plain talk to pick those things/hints up., friendlyA friendly person is generally considered warm, approachable and easy to relate with in character., naiveA naive person lacks worldly knowledge, experience, wisdom, understanding, or judgement., red hairThe character has red hair., short hairShort hair is hair from (but not including) bald, up to (but not including) shoulder-length hair. This hair length is what one would typically, though not always, see on most males. Short hair includes hair that goes no more than a centimetre or two beyond the chin; anything longer is shoulder-length., simple-mindedThis character exhibits a `special` sort of intelligence. Be it the inability to comprehend even the most simple of situations, or the lack of common sense found in even a preschooler, the character never ceases to amaze both the show`s cast and audience with their idiocy., teacherA teacher is a person who helps people to learn. A teacher often works in a classroom. There are many different kinds of teachers. Some teachers teach young children in schools called elementary or primary schools. Others teach older children in middle, junior high and high schools. Some teachers teach adults in more advanced schools.
