Benthos est la communauté d'organismes qui vivent sur, ou près du fond marin, également connu sous le nom de zone benthique. Cette communauté vit dans ou à proximité d'environnements sédimentaires marins, depuis les piscines de marées le long de l'estran, jusqu'au plateau continental, puis vers les profondeurs abyssales. De nombreux organismes adaptés à la pression des eaux profondes ne peuvent pas survivre dans les parties supérieures de la colonne d'eau. La différence de pression peut être très importante. Parce que la lumière ne pénètre pas dans l'océan-eau très profonde, la source d'énergie pour les écosystèmes benthiques profonds est souvent une matière organique de plus haut dans la colonne d'eau qui dérive jusqu'à la profondeur. Cette matière morte et en décomposition soutient la chaîne alimentaire benthique; La plupart des organismes de la zone benthique sont des charognards ou des détracteurs. Le terme «benthos» provient du nom grec β de "profondeur de la mer". Le Benthos est également utilisé dans la biologie de l'eau douce pour se référer aux organismes au fond des eaux d'eau douce, comme les lacs, les rivières et les cours d'eau. Benthos is the community of organisms which live on, in, or near the seabed, also known as the benthic zone. This community lives in or near marine sedimentary environments, from tidal pools along the foreshore, out to the continental shelf, and then down to the abyssal depths. Many organisms adapted to deep-water pressure cannot survive in the upper parts of the water column. The pressure difference can be very significant. Because light does not penetrate very deep ocean-water, the energy source for deep benthic ecosystems is often organic matter from higher up in the water column which drifts down to the depths. This dead and decaying matter sustains the benthic food chain; most organisms in the benthic zone are scavengers or detritivores. The term benthos comes from the Greek noun βένθος "depth of the sea". Benthos is also used in freshwater biology to refer to organisms at the bottom of freshwater bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, and streams.
