Un contacteur est un commutateur commandé électriquement utilisé pour commuter un circuit de puissance, similaire à un relais, sauf avec des valeurs de courant plus élevées. Un contacteur est contrôlé par un circuit qui a un niveau de puissance beaucoup plus faible que le circuit commuté. Les contacteurs sont sous de nombreuses formes avec des capacités et des fonctionnalités différentes. Contrairement à un disjoncteur, un contacteur n'est pas destiné à interrompre un courant de court-circuit. Les contacteurs varient de ceux qui ont un courant de rupture de plusieurs ampères à des milliers d'ampères et 24 V DC à plusieurs kilovolts. La taille physique des contacteurs varie d'un appareil suffisamment petit pour se retirer d'une main, vers de gros appareils d'environ un mètre sur un côté. Les contacteurs sont utilisés pour contrôler les moteurs électriques, l'éclairage, le chauffage, les batteries de condensateurs, les évaporateurs thermiques et d'autres charges électriques. A contactor is controlled by a circuit which has a much lower power level than the switched circuit. Contactors come in many forms with varying capacities and features. Unlike a circuit breaker, a contactor is not intended to interrupt a short circuit current. Contactors range from those having a breaking current of several amperes to thousands of amperes and 24 V DC to many kilovolts. The physical size of contactors ranges from a device small enough to pick up with one hand, to large devices approximately a meter on a side. Contactors are used to control electric motors, lighting, heating, capacitor banks, thermal evaporators, and other electrical loads.
