L'hypothèse documentaire, parfois appelée l'hypothèse de Wellhausen, propose que le Pentateuc soit dérivé de récits originairement indépendants, parallèles et complets, qui ont ensuite été regroupés sous la forme actuelle par une série de redactors. Le nombre de ces récits est habituellement fixé à quatre, mais ce n'est pas une partie essentielle de l'hypothèse. These four sources came to be known as the Yahwist, or Jahwist, J; the Elohist, E; the Deuteronomist, D,; and the Priestly Writer, P. The contribution of Julius Wellhausen, a Christian theologian and Christian biblical scholar, was to order these sources chronologically as JEDP, giving them a coherent setting in a notional evolving religious history of Israel, which he saw as one of ever-increasing priestly power.
