County
Un comté est une région géographique d'un pays utilisé à des fins administratives ou autres dans certaines nations modernes. Son étymologie découle de l'ancien terme français, conté ou cunté et pourrait désigner une juridiction en Europe continentale, sous la souveraineté d'un comte ou d'un vicomte. Le français moderne est comté, et ses équivalents dans d'autres langues sont contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, Gau, etc. Quand les Normands ont conquis l'Angleterre, ils ont apporté le terme avec eux. Les Saxons avaient déjà établi les quartiers qui devinrent les comtés historiques d'Angleterre, appelant les comtés. Les Vikings ont introduit le terme earl aux îles britanniques. Ainsi, "earl" et "earldom" ont été pris comme équivalent à l'utilisation continentale de "count" et "county". Ainsi, le terme importé ultérieurement est devenu un synonyme du mot en anglais indigène scir ou, dans l'anglais moderne, le comté. Comme un comté était une division administrative du royaume, le terme «comté» a évolué pour désigner une division administrative du gouvernement national dans la plupart des usages modernes. A county is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes in certain modern nations. Its etymology derives from the Old French term, conté or cunté and could denote a jurisdiction in mainland Europe, under the sovereignty of a count or a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, Gau, etc.. When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires. The Vikings introduced the term earl to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.
