Une maison de comptage, ou une maison de comptage, est littéralement le bâtiment, la pièce, le bureau ou la suite dans lequel une entreprise exerce ses activités, en particulier la comptabilité. Par une synécdoque, il s'agissait des opérations comptables d'une entreprise, mais logées. Le terme est d'origine britannique et est principalement utilisé dans le contexte du 19ème siècle ou des périodes antérieures. Le terme se produit dans la célèbre chronique maternelle anglaise "Sing a Song of Sixpence". Il apparaît également dans The Jewish of Malta de Christopher Marlowe, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, David Copperfield et American Notes de Charles Dickens, et Deadeye Dick, de Kurt Vonnegut. Counting House est également le nom donné aux premières entreprises qui stockent en toute sécurité des fonds publics et privés et des fonds prêtés. Counting House is also the name given to early businesses which safely stored public and private money and loaned money. The royal Counting House in the time of Henry VIII of England is described in the Eltham Ordinance of 1526 and could be constructed wherever the king was. A green cloth was to be laid daily over a table or board, and at this at least one clerk of the green cloth and the clerks' comptroller were to sit for at least one hour every morning from 8am.
