L'estimation est la procédure de recherche d'une estimation ou d'une approximation, qui est utilisable dans certains cas, même si les données d'entrée peuvent être incomplètes, incertaines ou instables. La valeur est néanmoins utilisable car elle provient des meilleures informations disponibles. Typiquement, l'estimation implique "l'utilisation de la valeur d'une statistique dérivée d'un échantillon pour estimer la valeur d'un paramètre de population correspondant". L'échantillon fournit des informations qui peuvent être projetées, par le biais de divers processus formels ou informels, pour déterminer une gamme la plus susceptible de décrire l'information manquante. Une estimation qui se révèle incorrecte sera une surestimation si l'estimation dépassait le résultat réel et une sous-estimation si l'estimation était inférieure au résultat réel. Estimation is the process of finding an estimate, or approximation, which is a value that is usable for some purpose even if input data may be incomplete, uncertain, or unstable. The value is nonetheless usable because it is derived from the best information available. Typically, estimation involves "using the value of a statistic derived from a sample to estimate the value of a corresponding population parameter". The sample provides information that can be projected, through various formal or informal processes, to determine a range most likely to describe the missing information. An estimate that turns out to be incorrect will be an overestimate if the estimate exceeded the actual result, and an underestimate if the estimate fell short of the actual result.
