Le féodalisme était un ensemble de coutumes légales et militaires dans l'Europe médiévale qui a prospéré entre les IXe et XVe siècles. En définitive, il s'agissait d'un système de structuration de la société autour des relations dérivées de l'exploitation de terres en échange de services ou de main-d'œuvre. Bien que dérivé du mot latin feodum ou feudum, alors utilisé, le terme féodalisme et le système qu'il décrit n'ont pas été conçus comme un système politique formel par les personnes vivant dans la période médiévale. There is also a broader definition, as described by Marc Bloch, that includes not only warrior nobility but all three estates of the realm: the nobility, the clerics and the peasantry bonds of manorialism; this is sometimes referred to as a "feudal society".
