L'hectare est une unité métrique d'une superficie de 10 000 mètres carrés et utilisée principalement dans la mesure des terres. En 1795, lorsque le système métrique a été introduit, le "are" a été défini comme 100 mètres carrés et l'hectare était donc 100 "ares" ou 1/100 km2. Un acre mesure environ 0,4047 hectare et un hectare contient environ 2,47 acres. Lorsque le système métrique a été rationalisé en 1960, ce qui a entraîné le Système international d'unités, il n'y a pas eu d'unité reconnue. L'hectare est l'une des unités non-SI acceptées pour être utilisées avec les unités SI.
