La mise à pied, également appelée redondance au Royaume-Uni, est la suspension temporaire ou la résiliation définitive d'un emploi d'un employé ou d'un groupe d'employés pour des raisons commerciales, par exemple lorsque certains postes ne sont plus nécessaires ou lorsqu'un ralentissement d'entreprise se produit. À l'origine, le terme «licenciement» se référait exclusivement à une interruption temporaire du travail, car lorsque le travail d'usine diminue cycliquement. Le terme, cependant aujourd'hui, signifie généralement l'élimination permanente d'un poste, ce qui nécessite l'ajout de «temporaire» pour spécifier la signification originale. Il existe de nombreux synonymes, comme la réduction des effectifs, dont la plupart sont des euphémismes ou des lettres doubles et des descriptions plus abstraites du processus, dont la plupart peuvent également être utilisées pour des processus plus inclusifs que pour réduire le nombre d'employés.
