Mediocrity principle
Le principe de la médiocrité est la notion philosophique selon laquelle «si un élément est tiré au hasard de l'un des plusieurs ensembles ou catégories, il est plus probable de venir de la catégorie la plus nombreuse que de l'une des catégories moins nombreuses». Le principe a été pris pour suggérer qu'il n'y a rien de très inhabituel sur l'évolution du système solaire, de la Terre, des humains ou de n'importe quelle nation. C'est une heuristique dans le volet du principe copernicien, et est parfois utilisé comme une déclaration philosophique sur le lieu de l'humanité. L'idée est d'assumer la médiocrité, plutôt que de commencer avec l'hypothèse qu'un phénomène est spécial, privilégié ou exceptionnel. Conformément à la notion, les astronomes ont signalé, le 4 novembre 2013, qu'il pourrait y avoir jusqu'à 40 milliards de planètes de taille terrestre en orbite dans les zones habitables des étoiles en forme de soleil et des étoiles naines rouges dans la Voie lactée, basées sur l'espace Kepler Données de mission. 11 milliards de ces planètes estimées peuvent être en orbite autour d'étoiles en forme de soleil. Consistent with the notion, astronomers reported, on 4 November 2013, that there could be as many as 40 billion Earth-sized planets orbiting in the habitable zones of sun-like stars and red dwarf stars within the Milky Way Galaxy, based on Kepler space mission data. 11 billion of these estimated planets may be orbiting sun-like stars. The nearest such planet may be 12 light-years away, according to the scientists.
