Modernism
Le modernisme est un mouvement philosophique qui, avec les tendances et les changements culturels, provient des transformations à grande échelle et profondes de la société occidentale à la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle. Parmi les facteurs qui ont façonné le modernisme, il s'agissait du développement des sociétés industrielles modernes et de la croissance rapide des villes, suivie de l'horreur de la Première Guerre mondiale. Le modernisme a également rejeté la certitude de la pensée des Lumières et de nombreux modernistes ont rejeté la croyance religieuse. Modernism also rejected the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, and many modernists rejected religious belief. Modernism, in general, includes the activities and creations of those who felt the traditional forms of art, architecture, literature, religious faith, philosophy, social organization, and activities of daily life were becoming outdated in the new economic, social, and political environment of an emerging fully industrialized world. The poet Ezra Pound's 1934 injunction to "Make it new!" was the touchstone of the movement's approach towards what it saw as the now obsolete culture of the past. Nevertheless, its innovations, like the stream-of-consciousness novel, twelve-tone music and abstract art, all had precursors in the 19th century.
