La polysomie se retrouve dans de nombreuses espèces, y compris les champignons, les plantes, les insectes et les mammifères. La plupart des espèces eucaryotes sont diploïdes, ce qui signifie qu'elles ont deux ensembles de chromosomes, tandis que les procaryotes sont haploïdes, contenant un seul chromosome dans chaque cellule. La polysomie est une condition dans laquelle un organisme a au moins un autre chromosome de la normale, c'est-à-dire qu'il peut y avoir trois copies ou plus du chromosome plutôt que les deux copies prévues. Les Aneuploids possèdent des nombres chromosomiques qui ne sont pas des multiples exacts du nombre haploïde et la polysomie est un type d'aneuploïdie. Most eukaryotic species are diploid, meaning they have two sets of chromosomes, whereas prokaryotes are haploid, containing a single chromosome in each cell. Polysomy is a condition in which an organism has at least one more chromosome than normal, i.e., there may be three or more copies of the chromosome rather than the expected two copies. Aneuploids possess chromosome numbers that are not exact multiples of the haploid number and polysomy is a type of aneuploidy. A karyotype is the set of chromosomes in an organism and the suffix -somy is used to name aneuploid karyotypes. This is not to be confused with the suffix, -ploidy, referring to the number of complete sets of chromosomes. Polysomy is usually caused by non-disjunction during meiosis, but may also be due to a translocation mutation. Polysomy is found in many diseases, including Down syndrome in humans where affected individuals possess three copies of chromosome 21. Down syndrome was initially described in 1866 by John Landon Down and almost a century passed before Jerome Lujeune correlated it with Trisomy 21 in 1959.
