Le son stéréophonique ou, plus fréquemment, la stéréo, est une méthode de reproduction du son qui crée une illusion de directionnalité et une perspective audible. Cela se fait généralement en utilisant deux ou plusieurs canaux audio indépendants grâce à une configuration de deux haut-parleurs ou plus de manière à créer l'impression de sons provenant de diverses directions, comme dans l'audition naturelle. Ainsi, le terme «stéréophonique» s'applique aux systèmes dits "quadraphoniques" et "surround-sound", ainsi que les systèmes de deux enceintes à deux canaux les plus communs. Il est souvent contrasté avec un son monophonique ou "mono", où l'audio se présente sous la forme d'un canal, souvent centrée sur le champ sonore. Le son stéréo est désormais courant dans les systèmes de divertissement tels que la radio et la télévision, la musique enregistrée et le cinéma. Le mot stéréophonique dérive du grec "στερεός", "ferme, solide" + "φωνή", "son, ton, voix" et il a été inventé en 1927 par Western Electric, par analogie avec le mot "stéréoscopique". The word stereophonic derives from the Greek "στερεός", "firm, solid" + "φωνή", "sound, tone, voice" and it was coined in 1927 by Western Electric, by analogy with the word "stereoscopic".
