Les Tatars, historiquement les Tartares, sont un terme générique pour les Turcs dans le territoire de l'ancien Empire russe. Les Tatars étaient la population turque de la Tartarie, les terres gouvernées par les élites turco-mongoles du XIVe siècle jusqu'à la conquête de l'Empire russe aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Au début de la période moderne, une distinction a été faite entre les territoires tatar européens et asiatiques, en se référant respectivement à la Tartarie et la Grande Tartarie. Le groupe le plus important qui a été appelé «Tatars» par les Russes sont les Tatars Volga, originaire de la région de la Volga, qui, pour cette raison, sont souvent simplement appelés «Tatars» et leur langue comme langue tatar. During the early modern period, a distinction was made between the European and Asian Tatar territories, by referring to Lesser Tartary and Greater Tartary, respectively. The largest group by far that has been called "Tatars" by the Russians are the Volga Tatars, native to the Volga region, who for this reason are often also simply known as "Tatars", and their language as the Tatar language. Their number is estimated as close to 6 million. Besides the Volga Tatars, there are smaller groups of Turkic-speaking Muslims also still referred to as "Tatars", the largest group of these being the Crimean Tatars, numbering close to half a million, whose Crimean Tatar language is not now intelligible with the Volga Tatar language.
