Les uvulaires sont des consonnes articulées avec l'arrière de la langue contre ou près de l'uvula, c'est-à-dire plus loin dans la bouche que les consonnes velar. Les Uvulars peuvent être des arrêts, des fricatives, des nasales, des trilles ou des approximants, bien que l'IPA ne fournisse pas un symbole distinct pour l'approximant, et le symbole de la fricative sonore est utilisé à la place. On peut certainement faire des affricités uvulaires mais sont rares: elles se produisent dans certains dialectes sud-allemands du sud, ainsi que dans quelques langues africaines et amérindiennes. Uvulars are consonants articulated with the back of the tongue against or near the uvula, that is, further back in the mouth than velar consonants. Uvulars may be stops, fricatives, nasals, trills, or approximants, though the IPA does not provide a separate symbol for the approximant, and the symbol for the voiced fricative is used instead. Uvular affricates can certainly be made but are rare: they occur in some southern High-German dialects, as well as in a few African and Native American languages.
