Les Purépechas sont un peuple autochtone qui habite l'état de Michoacán, au Mexique. Ils ont été appelés Tarascos par les Espagnols, étant une hispanisation d'un mot de leur langue qui signifie "beau-frère". Les raisons de cette désignation ont été discutées pendant longtemps sans qu'aucun accord ne soit trouvé. Aux XIVe et XVe siècles, l'empire Purépecha était prospère et fort, étaient des ouvriers qualifiés de cuivre et l'une des rares personnes que les Aztèques ne pouvaient maîtriser. Le "cazonci" ou M. Michoacano Tangaxoán II s'est soumis sans résistance contre le conquistador espagnol Cristóbal de Olid. En 1530, le gouverneur et président de la Première Audiencia, Nuno de Guzmán, a pillé la région, détruisant des temples et des tombes à la recherche de métaux précieux. En outre, il a ordonné l'exécution de Tangaxoán II, après qu'il ait été soumis à un procès dans lequel il était accusé d'avoir tué des Espagnols, maintenu clandestinement sa vieille religion et fomentant la désobéissance. Além disso, mandou executar a Tangaxoán II, depois de o haver submetido a um julgamento em que foi acusado de matar espanhóis, de manter clandestinamente a sua antiga religião e de fomentar a desobediência. Isto provocou um caos na região. Muitos indígenas fugiram para as montanhas e ocorreram diversos episódios de violência.
