MikroTik
[edit]Hi, can you please explain how this version differs from the last? I'm looking at a version from February 2017 and it is almost identical. The primary difference is actually the deleted version has more sources and this one is way more promotional. Praxidicae (talk) 21:42, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[]

- Hello, Doug Mehus. Well... not exactly "new", only low profile (most of the time...) and not very active, but I'm around for a while :-) Thank you for your warning, I think I used XFDCloser... Not so sure now... Maybe something went wrong and I have not noticed it. I will pay extra attention the next times to try to understand what went wrong. Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
[edit]A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement
[edit]The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.
Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
- Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Invitation to participate in a research
[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
BGerdemann (WMF) (talk) 19:21, 23 October 2024 (UTC) []

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:06, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[]

Guide to temporary accounts
[edit]Hello, Nabla. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → 👁 Tick
Enable the user info card- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

Removed PROD
[edit]Hi @Nabla, did you actually intend to DePROD this article. It looks like the dePRODing might have been a mistake.
Making these Iranian "village" (really, abadi) articles mass-created by Carlossuarez46 go through AFD, tends to be a waste of time as they practically never survive AFD because they aren't actually about "villages" but instead about named locations within Iran that the Iranian census has used as a reference point (e.g., bridges, pump, shops, factories , banks, etc. etc.). This is particularly the case when their location isn't even known, the low population means it can't be an official village under Iranian law, and the name of the location literally translates as "narrow gap" (i.e., it's likely a feature-name used by the Iranian census as a reference-point, not an actual village).
Additionally, this was an article created in violation of WP:MASSCREATE, as can clearly be seen from the fact that Carlossuarez46 created at least 121 articles on the same day this was created. I say "at least" because the ones that have been deleted in the intervening 13 years won't show up in this search. WP:MASSCREATE was in force on the day this article was created.
For more information, please see WP:ABADI for some examples of articles that have been deleted, as well as this ARBCOM case where they were desysopped, and this mass-deletion of 13,000 articles that Carlossuarez46 created.
If the deprodding was accidental, please revert and restore the template it so the deleting admin can see this. FOARP (talk) 10:35, 13 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- Hello. The dePRODing was not an accident. I understand it may look like so, givenm the weird edit summary. What happened was, I opened the article to edit, forgot to edit, wrote a edit summary explaining the dePRODing and saved. As it was a null edit it did not got saved, but I did not remembered that feature and I thought it did. Thus the template deletion with a weird summary.
- You deletion reason was "Per WP:ABADI. No reason to believe this is a village. No location to confirm that it is either" I checked the reference (with automated translation) and it points to it being some place with 74 people and 15 families. That surely looks like an inhabited place. It is not, say, 74 workers in a factory, because it clearly states families, the excel sheet says it is roughly 50/50 men and women, reeinforcing the ideia that it IS an inhabited place. Yes the name is strange, I have not noticed it, but it is not exceptional for a place to have some descriptive name (I live in one such place, also Rio de Janeiro is not a river, nor Newcastle upon Tyne is a castle, Campo Grande is not a field, and Long Beach, California is not a beach, and so on - sorry for the long list, I was enjoying the "game" of finding such cities :-) I am not trying to annoy you).
- I admit I have not fully read WP:ABADI - it says on top it may or may not be a village, I checked, it looked like a real inhabited place, "village" or otherwise, so I dePRODed. Giving it a second look, a from youir message, I note that the author was desysoped temporarily pending a full case, which never happened because they retired. So they were not desysoped because of this article. Yes they probably would, but they were not. The mass deletion tells me that the obvious deletions were taken care of, and this article was not one of them, so it should be considered on its own merits. So neither are strong arguments to delete any article, only a hint to be cautious than average and check them.
- That said, I currently think inhabited places are nearly inherently notable and we have lots of them. So why not this one? I understand that it has only a small chance of surviving a AfD discussion, but I do not think it is an obvious delete. So I will stand by my PROD tag removal, while aware of that.
- Thank you for you thorough and polite message! I hope mine is worthy of yours. Nabla (talk) 00:39, 14 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- Abadis are explicitly excluded from WP:GEOLAND for the exact reason that there’s typically no way of proving that they are actually villages. They (together with census tracts) are examples of inhabited locations that are not automatically notable on Wikipedia.
- As for the Iranian census giving a count for the number of families, the Iranian census does this for everywhere, factories/farms/military bases/nomad counting points included. It merely means that the people counted belonged to different households.
- But OK, we will have the AFD. FOARP (talk) 05:25, 14 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- Hello. I understand if you have some frustration due to I not understanding something that seems obvious to you. Please take into consideration that we can not know every detail of every policy, or guideline. I am quite surprised that one specific type of administrative region from one specific state is included/excluded from presumed notability. A historical artifact from the Carlossuarez46 case maybe. Allow me to suggest that in future PROD nominations you try to improve the text, because the issue was that you said that there is no reason to believe there is a village there, while the sources clearly state that there is a place with some name and some people there, presumably from households. I will look at the AfD, but probably not argue, for time constraints and to watch it without further influence from me. Maybe I learn something, as it happens that I am wrong, from time to time :-) Nabla (talk) 13:51, 14 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- We have dealt with hundreds upon hundreds of these already, so please do not be offended if I say that you really need to acquaint yourself in the long history of the abadi problem here before continuing. Mangoe (talk) 18:12, 14 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- Agree with Mangoe. Everything you needed to know here was linked in the Prod nomination. I then provided it in written-out format. I know there's some people out there who write whacky essays to support their weird opinions, but I genuinely promise you this is something that multiple editors including admins like myself have spent years trying to deal with, and the WP:ABADI essay is basically a summary of what we've learned doing that. A lot of it comes from what the Iranian editors told us about this issue - it was the intervention of the Iranians that finally stopped these articles being produced, because CS46 was essentially trashing their information-space with the absolute deluge of articles about "villages" in Iran that don't actually exist and they were quite angry about it.
- It's fine to not get this stuff entirely on the first encounter. The first time I encountered this stuff I was labouring under some similar misunderstandings (this was a parallel issue in the US where CS46 had also mass-created articles about places that don't really exist or are mines/post offices/stores/railway stations etc.). I listened to Hog Farm and the others and learned from them. FOARP (talk) 20:17, 14 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- I already explained my point of view. Then, I did not vote to keep the article. I don't care if it stays or goes. I simply dePRODed in good faith so there was no reason for me to revert my edit. It goes through AfD. So what? Oh there is someone over the internet that disagreed with you, you must convince me of your reason? You are probably right in deleting these, and there is no problem that your deletion message was not 100% clear to me. So? Consider improving the deletion message, or not, and move on. Nabla (talk) 21:34, 15 June 2026 (UTC)[]
- I did read User:FOARP's reasons, I explained why I dePRODed in good faith. I did not voted to keep, because I did read their reasons, I did got aquainted, I do agree there is no problem in deleting the article. I just did not see any point in reverting my good faith edit. So it goes through AfD, so what? Move on. Nabla (talk) 21:25, 15 June 2026 (UTC)[]
“So it goes through AFD, so what?”
I think for us the issue is this just becomes a pointless, wasted additional effort imposed for no real reason by someone who did not ultimately want to keep the article anyway. You are of course allowed to deprod for any and no reason. FOARP (talk) 05:23, 16 June 2026 (UTC)[]- I understand. But that's WP :-) Nabla (talk) 12:26, 16 June 2026 (UTC)[]
