UP PAC is one of several State Armed Police Forces who operate in addition to the regular state police, and are equipped to handle severe law and order situations. The ‘anti-Muslim’ narrative around the PAC gained traction after the 1987 Hashimpura killings.
The general diary, submitted through a witness Ranbir Singh Bishnoi (78) who deposed Tuesday, allegedly contains names of the PAC personnel who were named as accused and acquitted by a trial court in 2015.
The court will now hear the plea on August 4 along with petitions moved by the NHRC and kin of the victims, challenging acquittal of the 16 former Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel accused in the case.
After a long-drawn legal battle, 16 Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel, accused of killing 42 Muslims in Meerut, were acquitted by a Delhi court in March.
The state government’s Law Department is currently drafting its appeal which it plans to file in the last week of this month and for which it has collected the report of Meerut District Magistrate.
