Samrat Choudhary is one of the two new deputy chief ministers of Bihar. He alongwith Vijay Sinha have taken over the posts after Nitish Kumar dumped Mahagathbandhan and joined hands with the BJP and formed government with the BJP support on January 28, 2024.
Samrat, who has completed three decades in politics, has played his role in both the organization and government of BJP. He has served the party as MLA, Minister as well as State President of the party. Samrat Chaudhary comes from Koeri caste and is a prominent OBC face in BJP.
Samrat Chaudhary's political innings started in 1990 with Lalu Prasad Yadav led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). After working as an ordinary worker in various positions in politics, on 19 May 1999, he was made the Agriculture Minister in the Bihar Rabri Devi government.
He contested from Parbatta Vidhan Sabha constituency in 2000 and 2010 and was elected MLA. In 2010, he was given the responsibility of Chief Whip of the opposition party in the Assembly. After this, in 2014, he took charge of the post of Minister of State Urban Development and Housing Department. In 2018, he separated from Lalu Prasad and joined BJP and the party made him the state vice president of Bihar. At present he is a member of the Legislative Council. In March 2023, Samrat Chaudhary was made the Bihar State BJP President in place of Sanjay Jaiswal.
The CM also held discussions with representatives from chambers of commerce, industry associations and business organisations regarding opportunities linked to industry, trade, investment and employment generation in Bihar.
Following Samrat Choudhary’s elevation last week, the BJP has OBC CMs in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and now Bihar. In four states, it has upper castes at the helm.
