Xiaomi: From Startup to Global Tech Giant Xiaomi, co-founded by Lei Jun in 2010, rapidly ascended from a startup challenging established mobile phone manufacturers to a global technology powerhouse. Initial funding rounds, including a Series A round of $41 million, fuelled the launch of its first An...droid-based phone, the Xiaomi Mi 1, in 2011. Subsequent funding rounds valued the company at $4 billion by 2012, attracting investors like Temasek Holdings and Qualcomm. Expansion beyond China began in 2014, with the acquisition of mi.com and the establishment of an international headquarters in Singapore. Strategic hires, such as Hugo Barra from Google, propelled international growth. The company's aggressive expansion strategy saw it enter new markets, including Brazil (briefly), India, and Europe, achieving significant market share in India by 2017. Xiaomi’s success wasn’t without challenges. A 2012 data breach affected millions of user accounts.
