Parliament Budget Session 2026 Live Updates: A motion seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. Congress MP Dr Mohammad Jawed moved the resolution in the Lok Sabha, alleging that the Chair has failed to maintain the impartiality required to command the confidence of all sections of the House. During the discussion, TMC MP Mahua Moitra asked Speaker to “go, in the name of God”, saying Birla was “no longer fit to conduct the affairs of the House”.

In the resolution, Jawed accused the Speaker of disallowing the Leader of the Opposition and other Opposition leaders from speaking, making unwarranted allegations against women MPs from the Opposition, and suspending Opposition members for an entire session for raising issues of public concern. The motion also alleges that the Speaker did not rebuke ruling party members for making objectionable and derogatory remarks against former Prime Ministers.

Parliament Budget Session 2026 Live Updates: India revises fiscal deficit as % of GDP for FY23-FY25 after new GDP series, govt tells Rajya Sabha

India has revised fiscal deficit ratios upward for FY23-FY25 after introducing a new GDP series with 2022-23 as the base year, the government told Parliament.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the fiscal deficit now stands at 6.7% of GDP for FY23, 5.7% for FY24 and 4.9% for FY25.

The revised estimates follow the release of the updated GDP series on February 27, replacing the earlier base year of 2011-12.

A 27 per cent reservation for the OBC in direct recruitment to Centre civil posts and services was announced in the Lok Sabha. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) implemented this policy under an Office Memorandum dated September 8, 1993, along with subsequent instructions.

"Government has a reservation policy through OM (office memorandum) dated 8.9.1993 of the Department of Personnel and Training and other instructions issued from time to time, under which 27 per cent of vacancies in direct recruitment to civil posts and services under the government are reserved for OBCs (Socially and Educationally Backward Classes)," said Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B L Verma in a written statement.

Parliament Budget Session 2026 Live Updates: India to boost inter-regional power transmission capacity to 143 GW by 2027

India’s inter-regional power transmission capacity is set to increase to 143 GW by 2027 and further to 168 GW by 2032, the government informed Parliament on Monday.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said the capacity currently stands at about 120 GW as of December 2025 and is being expanded to support growing electricity demand.

The government expects peak electricity demand to reach around 388 GW by 2032, with plans to significantly expand the national transmission network.

However, Naik noted that delays in some inter-state transmission system projects have occurred due to Right of Way (RoW) issues affecting about 25 projects.

More than 24,000 MW of 'coal and lignite' based power capacity is at various planning stages in India, with more thermal projects under construction to meet future demand, the government informed Parliament on Monday.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik said 39,545 MW of thermal power capacity is currently under construction, including 4,845 MW of stressed projects.

The government has identified an additional 24,020 MW of coal and lignite capacity for future development as part of plans to meet rising electricity demand.

India’s thermal power capacity requirement is projected to reach about 307,000 MW by 2034-35, up from around 211,855 MW installed capacity as of March 2023.

SEBI has set up a working group and appointed a valuation agency to assess the Calcutta Stock Exchange’s (CSE) assets and liabilities, while awaiting additional information from the exchange.

Trading on the CSE has been suspended since April 2013, and it applied for voluntary exit in February 2025 after failing to meet regulatory requirements.

We believe and we continue to believe that dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sir, it is also imperative that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the region be respected.”

In a post on X, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said: "As the Parliament reconvenes for the second part of the Budget session, US-Israel war with Iran has reached our backyard. In this context, it is imperative to have a full-fledged discussion on the current geopolitical crisis. A one-sided statement by the EAM is not the solution. We need to collectively take the nation into confidence. The GOI must come out with a detailed contingency plan to ensure our energy security, assist our traders, diversify supply chains for our exports and stop penalising our people with price hikes. The Opposition demands sensitivity towards our people."
