Does Efficiency mitigate the effects of Mining Fatigue? Neither article says anything about it. Amatulic (talk) 03:34, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
There seems to be some dispute about this, so I'll do the math here, based on Enchanting mechanics :
First we start at level 30, since it's the highest possible base level.
Diamond tools have enchantability of 10, so divided by 4 it's 2.5, which gets rounded down to 2.
So "Modified enchantment level = B + R1 + R2 + 1" Becomes "Modified enchantment level = 30 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 35"
This then gets multiplied by 1.15 to be 40.25, which gets rounded to the nearest integrer, 40.
This means that the maximum modified level from an enchanting table for a diamond tool is 40, while the minimum for Efficiency V is 41, so you shouldn't be able to get it assuming the linked mechanics page is correct.
Enchanting tools like https://minecraft.tools/en/enchant.php agree with this; iron tools have a tiny chance of getting efficiency 5, while diamond tools don't.
It's easy to make a rounding error in some steps of the process, some parts of the mechanics page really aren't the clearest.
Especially the statement "Minecraft picks a number between 0 and half the enchantability, then adds that number plus one to the enchantment level. " is misleading because the rounding means that it only happens if the enchantability is divisible by 4, otherwise it ends up getting rounded down to just half enchantability, without the "plus one"
The way randomInt(n) is defined in the pseudocode on the page may also be unintuitive to some: "Returns a uniformly distributed random integer between 0 and nā1, inclusive", which means that "randomInt(3.5)" can only return 2 at most.

I recently noticed in 1.4.7 that efficiency 4 pickaxes mine dirt and wood faster than bare fists, despite being incorrect tools, meaning that it wasn't fully fixed in 1.4.5 as mentioned in the article. Surprised it's not mentioned anywhere. More research should be done on this. 98.167.209.245 08:48, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
I was looking at enchantments for something and I came across the enchantment list on the help site https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360058730912-Minecraft-List-of-Enchantments. Listed at #4 under melee weapons it says "Efficiency - When applied to an axe it increases the chance that the axe may stun a shield, with the base chance being 25% and a 5% increase for each level of efficiency. (Max enchantment level: 5) ". According to the History section in version 1.11 under 16w35a, this mechanic was removed to always have axes disable shields 100% of the time. I am unsure if this should be added since this is from the official site and I have nobody to test it with and not enough technical expertise to look at any chances. Could someone please assist?
