What do you mean saying "directory is created by the game client itself" ? What is the "game client" ? TwoBlocksMC (talk) 21:46, 11 June 2025 (UTC)

The game client aka. client.jar. What I mean is that even when launching the game without the official launcher, the directory will be created and used to store worlds, resource packs etc.
I'm working on an edit to clarify this right now. Grzesiek11 () 21:47, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
OK, but then you are saying about the Profile directory, containing the private game's files: yes, worlds, resource packs etc.
But this article is about the working directory where there are assets, versions, etc. and these subdirs are NOT created by the client, but by the Launcher.
That's why I wrote about the Launcher,
and sorry, but you were wrong reverting my changes. TwoBlocksMC (talk) 21:52, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
Right now the .minecraft page talks about both the files used by the client and the launcher. Both are called .minecraft, because that's the default directory name, for both the game and the launcher. Not sure where you got the "profile directory" and "working directory" names from, these are not officially called that to my knowledge. Grzesiek11 () 21:58, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
I think there could be merit in separating the descriptions and structures of these two things, but I can't really think of a way where it wouldn't be confusing for casual readers. For most people, it's both of them. If you want to talk about that, I think Talk:.minecraft would be more appropriate. Grzesiek11 () 22:14, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
To explain the terms I used:
- working directory: name after --workDir parameter for the Launcher,
see: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Launcher#Command_line_usage
and it may be simply understood as just the .minecraft dir ;)
Also just below in .minecraft there is a link:
https://minecraft.wiki/w/Tutorial:Custom_Minecraft_directory
- profile is an old name for the current Installation (see "Installations" tab in the launcher),
that may have a separate dir containing only a few subdirs, specific for the Installation (Profile), usually only:
/logs, /resourcepacks, /saves, options.txt and servers.dat.
"Profile" was commonly used in this Wiki, for example look at this revision from 2019:
https://minecraft.wiki/w/Minecraft_Launcher?oldid=1375238#Profiles
see also following screen showing Profile Editor: https://minecraft.wiki/w/File:Alpha_Versions.png
A relic/remnant of a "profile" is the file named launcher_profiles.json containing Installations data (previously named as "profiles"). TwoBlocksMC (talk) 23:25, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
That makes sense, thanks. I forgot this used to be called a profile rather than an installation, and I usually use Prism where it's called an instance. The official name for the directory specifically seems to be "game directory", looking at File:New Installation.png, and also at File:Alpha Versions.png which you sent.
I have made another edit, trying to convey the difference between the game directory, and the launcher directory (working directory is a thing in computing in general, so I wanted to avoid using that for the specific case of the launcher, and "launcher working directory" seems a little redundant). Feel free to make edits on top on that, or further discuss how this should be improved, though preferably that'd be on the article talk page, where others can discuss this too. I was also thinking about separating these two dirs: game's and launcher's, and you've already done it. Good work!
Soon, I will add there some notes about these dirs, because the term "game directory" is being used commonly, but often it's mixed-up and misunderstood, leading to confusion (mainly because it is mixed-up by default in the official launcher). TwoBlocksMC (talk) 14:25, 18 June 2025 (UTC)
I finished that edit, you can check it out. Grzesiek11 () 21:50, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
