Architecture

[edit | edit source]

The building is a minimum of two stories tall, with a sign the same height as the roof and a large clocktower in the cente. Despite having an official name, the sign merely reads "School," with engravings of what appear to be griffins and gusts of wind. The exterior building is composed primarily of bricks, with several sets of windows; four on the first floor, eight on the second. The roof is angled with several shingles, and on the right side an American flag, either on top of or behind the roof. The entrance to the building is a series of stairs, leading up to a set of pillars holding up a dome, with doors nearly twice the size of the windows. Below the stairs are two sets of three bushes half the size of the windows.

When Ash Kapoor first enrolls in the school, she fantasizes the building being reminiscent of various "evil" locations, such as a haunted fortress, forgotten temple, or even an "alien stronghold on some far-off moon." During this fantasy she pictures it as a castle made of blocks, primarily what appears to be either bricks or cobblestone, approximately two and a half feet tall. This rendition consists of five spires; two in the distance, and three with windows at the front. The stairs are now human sized, with visible railings, wooden doors reminiscent of spruce, and a school zone sign placed on the edge of the street.

Points of interest

[edit | edit source]

Ms. Minerva's class

[edit | edit source]

The classroom of Ms. Minerva is a major setting of the series, being the apparent main room for the protagonists, and the home of Baron Sweetcheeks. Ms. Minerva teaches from a simple wooden desk in front of a whiteboard, which often shows what appears to be mathematical equations and pi charts. Beside the white board is a poster explaining unknown details concerning a triangle, square, and rectangle. As opposed to individual desks, the students are sat at long tables, seemingly made of a marble-like material. Behind the students is an air vent large enough to fit several bats, as well as further posters, including one of a zombie, and a grid of 40 squares.

The Bat House

[edit | edit source]

Following an infestation of bats, a small enclosure was constructed to house them. It was situated off on the lawn of the school, and was built out of sparse boards from Ash Kapoor's treehouse.

Field Day

Field Day is an annual event held at the school, where kids partake in various outdoor activities. For at least one year, it was held on Friday, with two teams of players for the event: Team Red, hosted by Doc Culpepper, and Team Blue, hosted by Ms. Minerva. To prepare for this event, gym class was made into a recess period where each kid could practice whatever interested them.

Project Coral Restoration

[edit | edit source]

During the events of Deep Dive!, coral reefs across the globe were suffering from climate change.[1] To encourage protecting them, Doc Culpepper began teaching experiments to grow new coral in a laboratory, referring to this as Project Coral Restoration. During this assignment, the class was split into groups of two, with Harper Houston and Theo Grayson working together for the first time. After learning coral can be split into several pieces and continue growing, Theo got an idea and stole a piece from the aquarium. Not thinking of the consequences of this, Theo chose to use this piece for jewelry, and sold it to Ricky. To resolve this, it's suggested to recycle lunch trays into fake coral jewelry. The project concluded with several real corals regrown, transported to a reef off the coast of Florida.

The Phantasm of the Cafetorium

[edit | edit source]

Appearing in Dungeon Crawl!, The Phantasm of the Cafetorium is a play exclusive to the school, intended as a parody of Phantom of the Opera. Inspired by Ms. Minerva's love of French pastries, Theo Grayson was cast as the titular Phantasm. Due to an incident involving Doc Culpepper last year, the play's production has little use of technology.

Woodsword Chronicler

[edit | edit source]

The Woodsword Chronicler is the school newspaper, first appearing in Mobs Rule! trying to cover the class election within Ms. Minerva's room. At least one editor is shown to be working for the paper, Ned Brant, who approaches Po Chen about his campaign.

Quotes

[edit | edit source]

Ash Kapoor stood in the shadow of the castle. It was a cursed place, with dark windows and tall, twisting turrets. A flag snapped in the wind. On it was the image of some fearsome beast, the likes of which she'd never seen. A crow cawed in the distance.

Any other kid would be afraid right now, Ash thought. But not me. I eat danger for breakfast! Ash had in fact eaten oatmeal for breakfast.

And she wasn't standing in front of a spooky old castle, either. It was just her new school, Woodsword Middle. But if she squinted at the building just right, she could imagine it was a haunted fortress, or a forgotten temple, or an alien stronghold on some far-off moon.

β€” Ash's first impression of the school.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • The name of the school newspaper is a reference to the name of the books' original series, Woodsword Chronicles. Ironically, that name was itself in reference to the school.
  • The school's flag depicts a design with approximately 22 stars. In real life, such a design was used from only 1820-1822.[2]
