Transfer WhatsApp data to a new Android
You can transfer WhatsApp chats and data from your old iPhone or Android to your new Android device.
Transfer WhatsApp chats from iPhone to Android
The transfer method varies based on how you set up your device.
Important:
- A Google Account is required to download WhatsApp and transfer chats.
- Your old device's charging cable is required.
- You must use the same phone number on the new device as the old device.
- To avoid overwriting new messages, transfer your chat history before you use WhatsApp on your new device.
In this case, your WhatsApp chats won’t be copied during device setup.
To copy data after you set up your Android device:
- Open your device's Settings app.
- You might also receive a notification to copy data. If you received one, tap the notification.
- Tap Accounts & backup 👁 and then
Android Switch 👁 and then
Transfer WhatsApp Chats. - To transfer WhatsApp chats, follow the on-screen instructions.
- When prompted, insert a cable to connect both devices.
- It’s recommended that you use the cable from your old iPhone. If the cable doesn’t fit, use an adapter.
- On your iPhone, tap Trust.
- To allow access to WhatsApp data, enter your PIN.
- You may have to enter your PIN multiple times.
- Use your iPhone's camera app to scan the QR code shown on your Android device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions in WhatsApp.
- Wait until data transfer is complete.
- When complete, disconnect the cable from both devices.
- Sign in to WhatsApp on your Android phone.
- When prompted, insert a cable to connect both devices.
In this case, your WhatsApp chats will be copied during device setup along with other data.
- During device setup:
- Connect to a network.
- Sign in to a Google Account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- When your screen reads “Copy apps and data,” tap Copy from iPhone or iPad.
- When prompted, connect both phones with your old iPhone cable.
- If you receive a warning on your iPhone:
- Tap Trust.
- Enter your PIN.
- If you receive a warning on your iPhone:
- On the copy screen, make sure that you choose Apps along with any other data you want to transfer.
- To check if WhatsApp is included in the list of apps to transfer, tap Apps.
- After you select data to transfer, you’ll find steps on how to transfer WhatsApp chats.
- Use your iPhone's camera app to scan the QR code shown on your Android device.
- If you can't scan the QR code:
- On your iPhone, open WhatsApp.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Chats 👁 and then
Transfer chat history 👁 and then
Transfer to Android.
- If you can't scan the QR code:
- To begin data transfer, on your iPhone, tap Start 👁 and then
Start transfer. - When the data transfer is complete, sign in to WhatsApp on your Android phone.
Important:
- The transfer of data to a device that has already been set up may vary across devices. It requires a factory reset in some cases. Learn how to reset your Android device to factory settings.
- If you skip the initial data transfer in device setup, you have 3–7 days to restore chats from your iPhone.
- Open your device’s Settings app.
- Tap Accounts and backup 👁 and then
Copy data using Android Switch.- The location of this option may slightly vary based on your device manufacturer and Android version.
- For Samsung devices, use Smart Switch.

Tip: Do not open WhatsApp on your new Android device until the transfer is complete. If you open WhatsApp and you can’t find this option, you need to factory reset your device.
Troubleshooting tips
WhatsApp transfer may not be available for devices with enterprise certificates.
- To manually remove an installed certificate, go to Settings.
- Tap General 👁 and then
VPN & Device Management. - Select a profile.
- Tap More Details.
- To remove the certificate, tap the certificate.
