Add formatting to your Google Chat messages

To change the appearance of your Chat messages, you can use the format menu, use markdown formatting, or add block quotes.

Format Google Chat messages

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app 👁 Image
    or Gmail app 👁 Image
    .
  2. Go to a conversation.
  3. Enter a message.
  4. On the left, tap Action menu 👁 Add
    👁 and then
    Format 👁 Color text
    .
  5. Select an option:
  6. Tap Send 👁 Image
    .
Tip: To quickly add or remove text format, touch and hold the text, then tap Format.

Use markdown formatting in Google Chat

You can use markdown formatting to add styling to your messages using special characters.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app 👁 Image
    or Gmail app 👁 Image
    .
  2. As you type your message, add characters to update the formatting of your text:
Format option Markdown example
Bold *Text*
Italicize _Text_
Strikethrough ~Text~
Inline code block `Text`
Multi-line code block ```Text```
Block quote >Text
Bullet - Text or * Text

Tips:

  • An inline code block wraps the text.
  • After a multi-line code block is sent, you can use a toggle to turn the line wrapping on or off.

Add block quotes

To highlight key text or citations in your Chat messages, use block quotes.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chat app 👁 Image
    or Gmail app 👁 Image

  2. Go to a conversation.
  3. Enter a message.
  4. Highlight the text you want to format.
  5. Tap Send 👁 Image
    .
