Add formatting to your Google Chat messages
To change the appearance of your Chat messages, you can use the format menu, use markdown formatting, or add block quotes.
Format Google Chat messages
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Chat app 👁 Image
or Gmail app 👁 Image
.- In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat 👁 Image

- In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat 👁 Image
- Go to a conversation.
- Enter a message.
- On the left, tap Action menu 👁 Add

Format 👁 Color text
. - Select an option:
- To strikethrough: Tap Strikethrough 👁 Strikethrough
. - To bold: Tap Bold 👁 Bold
. - To italicize: Tap Italic 👁 Italic
. - To underline: Tap Underline 👁 Underline
. - To change the text color: Tap Text color 👁 Color text
. - To add a bullet point before the text: Tap Bulleted list 👁 Bulleted list
. - To highlight a text or citation: Tap Block quote 👁 Image
. - To insert a link:
- Tap Insert link 👁 Insert link
. - Enter the link.
- Tap Insert link 👁 Insert link
- To add inline code: Tap Code 👁 Image
. - To add multi-line code block: Tap Code block 👁 Image

- To strikethrough: Tap Strikethrough 👁 Strikethrough
- Tap Send 👁 Image

Tip: To quickly add or remove text format, touch and hold the text, then tap Format.
You can use markdown formatting to add styling to your messages using special characters.

Tips:
- An inline code block wraps the text.
- After a multi-line code block is sent, you can use a toggle to turn the line wrapping on or off.
Add block quotes
You can use block quotes to highlight key text or citations in your Chat messages.
