Manage passwords in Chrome

When you use Chrome, Google Password Manager saves your passwords for different sites.

You can save your passwords with Google Password Manager in many ways:

  • Save passwords to your Google Account: When you're signed in to Chrome, you can save your passwords to your Google Account and use them across your devices and in some apps.
  • Save passwords to your device: When you’re not signed in to Chrome, it stores passwords locally on your device. This is helpful if you don’t want to save passwords to your Google Account or share them across multiple devices.
  • Import passwords from your device to your Google Account: You can always import passwords saved on your device to your Google Account. Learn how to import passwords with Chrome.

You can manage passwords saved to your Google Account in Chrome or any other web browser at passwords.google.com.

Manage new passwords

If you enter a new password on a site, Chrome will ask to save it. To accept, tap Save.
If you want to preview, review, or adjust a password:
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ More
    .
  3. Tap Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  4. Below the search bar, tap Add password πŸ‘ New tab
    .
  5. Enter the website, username, and password.
  6. At the top right, tap Save.
  1. On your Android device, sign in to Chrome.
  2. Go to a website and sign up for an account.
  3. Tap on the password text box πŸ‘ and then
    Suggest strong password.
  4. You'll get a preview of the password. To confirm, tap Use password.
  5. Finish your account sign-up.

Your generated password is automatically saved to your Google Account.

By default, Chrome offers to save your password. You can turn this option off or on at any time.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ Image
    .
  3. Tap Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  4. At the bottom right, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    .
  5. Turn Offer to save passwords on or off.

Manage saved passwords

If you saved your password on a previous visit to a website, Chrome can help you sign in. 
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. Go to a site you've visited before.
  3. Go to the site’s sign-in form.
  4. To choose the sign-in info that you want to use, select the username field.
  5. To sign in with your username and password on your device, you may need to use your fingerprint or passcode.

If Chrome doesn't offer your saved password: To get possible passwords, tap Password πŸ‘ Save your password

You can add notes to a saved password to help you remember info about an account or to save details required at sign in. Once you add a note, it has the same security protection as a password.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ More
    .
  3. Tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  4. Under β€œSearch passwords,” select a password.
  5. Tap Edit.
  6. In the text box, enter your note.
  7. At the top right, tap Save.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome

  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ More
    Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  3. Show, edit, delete, or export a password:
    • Show: Tap the password that you want to show πŸ‘ and then
      Show password πŸ‘ Preview
      .
    • Edit: Tap the password that you want to change and tap Edit. Edit your password, then tap Save.
    • Delete: Tap the password that you want to remove, then tap Delete.
    • Export: Tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
      πŸ‘ and then
      Export passwords.
You can delete your Google Password Manager data, which include passwords and passkeys from Google Password Manager settings.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  3. At the bottom right, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Delete all data πŸ‘ and then
    Delete.

You can check if your saved passwords were exposed in a data breach by checking all of them at once.

To check your saved passwords:

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ More
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings πŸ‘ Image
    .
  3. Tap Google Password Manager πŸ‘ and then
    Checkup.

Learn what you can do with your passwords

Important:

To securely share a copy of your saved password with a family member:

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ More
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  3. Under β€œSearch passwords,” select a password.
  4. At the bottom left, tap Share πŸ‘ Image
    .
  5. Select the family member you want to share with.
  6. Tap Share πŸ‘ and then
    Done.
    • The password is saved in the receiver's Google Account and available for autofill.

Tips:

  • Use unique passwords for all your online accounts.
    • If you use the same password for multiple accounts, anyone you share a password with may be able to access your other accounts.
  • If you don’t want to share this service, change your password.

You can automatically sign in to any sites and apps where you've saved your info with "Sign in automatically." When you turn on "Sign in automatically," you don't need to confirm your username, password, or third-party sign-in credentials.

If you want to confirm your saved info when you sign in, you can turn off "Sign in automatically."
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome

  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ Image
    .
  3. Tap Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  4. At the bottom right, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    .
  5. Turn Auto sign-in on or off.

If you saved your passwords on previous visits to websites, Chrome can help you autofill that info.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. Go to a site you've visited before.
  3. Go to the site's sign-in form.
  4. To choose the sign-in info that you want to use, select the username field.

Tips:

If you have passwords and passkeys, or network devices, you can use filters to find accounts more easily.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  3. To apply filters, at the bottom left, tap Account πŸ‘ Save your password
    .
  4. At the top, on the filter bar, select a category you’d like to filter:
    • All
    • Passwords
    • Passkeys
    • Network devices

For easy access, you can add the Google Password Manager shortcut to your home screen.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. Tap Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Google Password Manager.
  3. At the bottom right, tap Settings πŸ‘ Image
    .
  4. Tap Add shortcut to your home screen.
  5. To place the shortcut in your home screen, touch and hold the shortcut.

Tip: You can manage your passwords with the Google Password Manager app. Learn how to download Google Password Manager app.

Important: The Google Password Manager app provides a shortcut to Google Password Manager on your Android device. All of your data, including passwords, passkeys, and notes, is stored in your Google Account and won’t be removed when you uninstall this app. Learn how to delete all Google Password Manager data.

On your device, you can uninstall the Google Password Manager app directly from the Home Screen, App Drawer, or Settings menu.

From the Home Screen or App Drawer

  1. On your Android device, locate the Passwords app πŸ‘ Image
    .
    • You can find it on your Home Screen or in your App Drawer.
  2. Touch and hold Passwords πŸ‘ Image
    .
  3. To uninstall, you can either:
    • Drag Passwords πŸ‘ Image
      to Uninstall πŸ‘ Image
      .
      • For other Android devices, the β€œUninstall” icon may vary.
    • On the menu, tap Uninstall.
  4. When prompted, confirm your selection.

From the Settings menu

  1. On your Android device, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. To find a list of installed apps, tap See all apps.
  4. Tap Passwords πŸ‘ Image
    πŸ‘ and then
    Uninstall.
    • You’ll find a confirmation dialog box.
  5. To confirm, tap OK.

You may get an alert from Chrome if you use a password and username combination that has been compromised in a data leak on a third party website or app. Compromised password and username combinations are unsafe because they’ve been published online.

We recommend that you change any compromised passwords as soon as you can. You can check your saved passwords and find sites that use the compromised password.

Chrome makes sure that your passwords and usernames are protected so they can’t be read by Google.

To change your compromised password when you get an alert:

  1. Tap Password Checkup.
  2. Follow the prompts to change your password on each site.

If you use Safe Browsing and select β€œEnhanced protection,” these checks will happen automatically. If you want to turn these checks off, you can switch to β€œStandard protection.” To start or stop getting these notifications:

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome πŸ‘ Chrome
    .
  2. At the top right, tap More πŸ‘ More
    πŸ‘ and then
    Settings πŸ‘ and then
    Privacy and security.
  3. Tap Safe browsing πŸ‘ and then
    Standard protection.
  4. Turn Warn you if a password was compromised in a data breach on or off.

Important: This feature is only available if you have turned β€œSafe Browsing” on. Learn how to choose your Safe Browsing protection level in Chrome.
