Sony is a creative entertainment company with a portfolio that encompasses electronics, music, motion pictures, mobile, gaming, and more.
For over 70 years, imagination has been the fuel of everything we do. From how people listen to music, to how they play games, to how they watch TV, our big imaginations have led us to create products that innovate and inspire generations.
Bring home the impeccable clarity of 4K and stunning detail of High Dynamic Range.
Experience movies with four times the resolution of conventional Blu-ray (Full HD), with new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
An HDR 10 signal contains up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly-detailed blacks, for an entirely new viewing experience.
Bring scenes to life with striking highlights, deeper darks and vibrant colors. Dolby Vision is an HDR solution that creates an immersive, engaging cinematic experience in your home.
Support for BT.2020 color spaces means access to a much wider range of colors than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide color space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic color from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.
Connect your AV technology to the UBP-X700 with HDMI and Coaxial SPDIF.
Watch 4K HDR films, and enjoy additional shadow and highlight detail.
The UBP-X700U's playing power goes far beyond 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. You can watch and listen to anything you like – including most high-definition video and audio formats. The X700U also upscales content to the highest quality possible, so you’re always enjoying movies and shows in high resolution.
Dolby Atmos treats sounds as separate objects, releasing them from the restraints of typical channels to move freely around and even above you for deeply immersive surround sound. DTS:X audio can create a large number of audio objects that adapt to your speakers in real time.

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Learn more how customers reviews work on AmazonThe last model, X700M, had a decent amount of issues with 100GB discs, with some machines being apparently unable to play a lot of discs. There is no telling how much user error plays into this and how much it is bad software or hardware. That machine also ran a lot of apps and was quite bloated for such a simple device.
I do not have, so far, consistent problems playing 100GB discs. Around 20 discs have played flawlessly, and one disc, on resume days later, seemed to stick on the layer transition. But since it was a resumed disc, and only one disc, I have no idea how often this could happen. Yet I don't watch movies 24/7, and since the issue only happened once, I can't say I care too much. All the players on the market have their issues, and I can't be bothered. I will however update this review to reflect my experience.
I recommend this player above others at this time on SALE. Because it does upscaling, and it has superior audio options, I personally do not see the point in paying 400-800 dollars for a Panasonic player UNLESS you really want the subtitle dimming options, which are very nice if that is something you need for bright HDR films. The UB820 is absolutely no stranger to many issues. Please do not believe shills, and go and see the reviews to make a logical conclusion. It is my thought that all these players can have issues, and there are certain levels you invest in that are sane. 400-800 dollars for me insane, though, I would like the subtitle dimming personally for some films.
The same issues apply to the lesser 200-400 dollar version, the UB420, that does not have upscaling or Dolby Vision. But if you do not require DV then it is an option to consider. There is also a mid option that Panny sometimes has available with DV. All of these models have their issues as you can freely read in reviews. I picked the Sony because I simply wanted something manufactured not too long ago.
Notes about HDR settings:
In various circumstances I use Tone Mapping ON with an LG OLED, Dolby Vision when available, or HDR10 to view a film. Tone Mapping negates either of the other choices when selected.
Tone Mapping is used on my C1 because when HDR grades are incredibly dim, using Tone Mapping and then also sliders for Pixel Brightness and Contrast down slightly produces the best image with the most luminance on my LG C1. Films like The Thing, with only HDR10 in the version I have, appear quite dim and unrealistic in the snow. The Fugitive on the other hand is very bright and more realistic on 4K, not requiring Tone Mapping at all.
I find Dolby Vision usually superior to HDR10, so that makes the cheaper Panasonic model quite useless for me. Because usually I seem to prefer Tone Mapping on when DV is not available, it is something I require for 4K movies. There just isn't as much dynamic room for changes with HDR10, and some 4K releases are very conservative, only grading smaller highlights with higher luminance. These conservative grades tend to not work out for me with only HDR10.
Please do research on these issues before buying. Panasonic players seem to have slightly better fonts and menu graphics compared to the Sony; read about that issue below. It's an annoying issue for some of these players, but it's a minor issue.
I would personally NOT buy the older Sony X700M model, as it has other issues that you may or may not experience. It's simply not worth it on sale or otherwise because the probability is high you might encounter issues.
For player options, 4K upscaling is on, Dolby Vision is on when needed, and I do not generally connect to the internet unless updating firmware; a disclaimer for those that care about some of the settings that may have affected the last player. I still think it was apps and overloading of the processor that probably caused a lot of the issues, but I have no idea what leads to disc freezes and stalls overall. No one does.
The X700U looks refined yet simple, and while the glossy plastic on the front looks great at first, as with many other 4K players, it scratches with any kind of wipe whatsoever. Be careful when handling the device, and use your remote for opening and closing if you really care about it. Watch out for fingerprints they will not come out either at least if you are looking with a flashlight.
The software is about the same from last time. I see the firmware is new, but the feature set appears mostly the same as the last player. They may have dropped or added one or two things. This player was almost silent in operation. I detected very little noise from the player itself while playing 100GB discs like Chinatown, Dark City, and Seven.
I do not want or need streaming apps on my player, and Sony has gotten rid of them thankfully. The more streamlined this thing is the easier it will be to play the discs, the only part I care about on a 4K player. Hopefully they have tinkered with the chipset and laser to produce something that is consistently solid over time while playing 100GB discs.
As always use a MagicFiber cloth or something similar to clean your discs, and never put a dirty disc in your player ever. One of the best things about this player is the automatic door that closes and opens with the tray. It prevents most dust from entering the tray area, leading to a cleaner player over time. Remember, keep the player in a more open environment, and don't let dirt or dust in whenever possible. That's all we can do to make sure things are working well on our end.
The remote is small and nice to use for my hands. Easy to press the buttons, and the sensor in the player can see it from wide angles. No issues with setup at all. Really didn't have to change many settings. The in-movie options menu has more options, but I wish they would have at least upped the resolution on the font.
Player control fonts on a 4K screen look like DVD or early Bluray days, and it's the only thing I dislike about this player. How hard can it really be to upscale some fonts and put some polish on your UI presentation? Seems like something that could easily be done, yet Sony refuses for some reason.
Remember, you have to toggle Dolby Vision on or off on this player, and so far it has worked fine. I don't consider it an issue at all as I set up a movie beforehand, but just keep in mind you need to toggle it off if the 4K film does not have Dolby Vision. If you forget to toggle for an HDR10-only film, well in general it doesn't do that much in my experience, but the HDR data will be a bit different.
All in all I really hope this one is quality because the image is great, audio options for SACD are a plus for audiophiles, and I really don't want to have loads of issues with 100GB discs again. Prayers are out. Sony, please update the resolution of your UI.
This a is great 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player. It accessed all features on the 4K Heavy Metal blu-ray I tested it on. It includes everything to set up and view: The player, power cord, remote control, batteries for the remote, and an 18Gbps HDMI cable to connect for full video capabilities. It was plug and play with no issues on my Vizio smart-TV. For a respected brand name like Sony, the price was very very good compared to competitors models.
Having the Sony X800M2, the settings are basically identical. I honestly can’t tell a difference in picture quality between the two. The only thing I noticed is this player is a little louder when playing discs, but it hasn’t affected performance at all. Overall, a great 4K player and definitely worth it for the price. As far as skipping,I feel it handles tripple layer disk pretty well. If it does freeze/ skip. It fights through its sticking points. Haven’t had to stop and start a disk yet.
This is a great player that will play a wide range of media. The player can upscale non 4K discs to 4K as well as add HDR. There is also a 24p mode if you prefer a more film like experience. The only issues I've encountered is that the player can struggle when upscaling Blu Ray discs that contain higher bit rate video and some scenes can appear choppy in 24p mode. These weren't deal breakers for me, my television upscales as well so I turned off upscaling and let my television do the upscaling work. I prefer 60p over 24p so I only used the 24p mode to see what it was like. Over all I am highly satisfied with this player.
I came into this purchase wanting a few things: 1. Able to read larger blu-ray disks. 2. Fast loading. 3. All codecs
This unit seems to score on all fronts. It has read my disks that in the past, were not readable by my older unit. It loads quickly and allows a nice top menu that is quick. I agree with other reviewers that the buttons on the remote are a bit on the small side, but that is common to almost all electronics these days. I think the price point is ok, considering my older OTTO was well over $500. That was my standard for years. In any case, I stream almost all my movies these days, but the Blu-ray player is still used for music videos that for some reason, are not always locatable on the streamers. I recommend this unit - think you will like it.
This unit has all one could ask for in a blue ray player.
The picture image is beautiful on blue ray discs and quite good on non blue rays.
Am still tinkering with sound bar connections but that is me. Overall set up was easy. Multi format features are good. Nice for the price
Picked this up on sale on Prime Day, and I’m very glad I did. It is simply a no-frills high quality 4K Player: it lacks any display, lacks WiFi, and any built-in streaming services, and I’m perfectly fine with that.
What it does have is an excellent 4K UHD picture and very good upscaling of HD blu-ray content.
It has Atmos, Dolby Vision, and DTS-X, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. It also has something exceedingly hard to find today: SACD support.
This player lacks analog outputs, but those are not missed at all. Instead you get HDMI capable of delivering 192/24 PCM resolution and native DSD.
I use the DACs in my processor, so this unit is acting primarily as a transport.
The only things it can’t play are DVD-Audio discs (a dead format) and HDCD-encoded CDs.
For this price and performance I’m perfectly happy to let those things go.
Some have complained about older models not reading 100GB discs. So far I have had no trouble going doing so. Hope it stays that way.
Highly recommended!
These are my first impressions upon receiving the product. I may update my review, as needed, after more use. I was surprised at how small this unit is, which is a plus IMO. I was aware it had no WiFi capability, which wasn’t an issue for me since I have an Ethernet connection for it already (replacing an older player), however I do think it is short sighted to cut this capability from such devices. My thinking on this was Sony just wanted a little more profit.
The player seems to do its basic function sufficiently with the two new UHD 4K titles I’ve tried so far (Ben-Hur, Excalibur), though some tweaking may be in order. Excalibur seems to show in 4:3 ratio and I’m not sure yet if this is intended.
Right now my two biggest gripes, as appears to be with other customers, is that the UI seems to be straight from the 1990’s. Really Sony, you could not update the look and functionality in 30+ years? The other gripe is the awful, cheap looking and feeling, remote control. Nothing screams cheap, low quality player like a remote you’d find in a knock off brand no one has ever heard of before. Again, really Sony, do you not care about reputation over a small amount of profit? The remote is small, the buttons crammed together with little placement logic. The button push feels cheap, bad and inconsistently successful. The remote is not backlit, and with the buttons crammed together you have to turn on a light, destroying immersion, to find the right button to press 2-3 times to get it to work. Honestly this unit does not deserve the price point or the (formerly positive) Sony name. Or maybe perhaps it does now deserve today’s Sony name.
The seller failed to mention that it comes with 120V 60 Hz power supply that will not work in India and will fry your expensive player than you so enthusiastically bought
otimo produto, comprei porque sabia da qualidade tanto de imagem quanto de som, ja que gosto de usar a entrada USB para escutar musica
Works very well with 4K Blu-ray DVDs and regular DVDs. The Sony Blu-ray player connected to my Sony 4K brings out the best even in older regular DVDs and a theater-like quality from 4K DVDs. I would expect other 4K TVs to do likewise. The unit is surprisingly small in size compared to older units but delivers much better picture quality as it upscales images on it's own and if connected to non-4K TVs. A good alternative to streaming services where you pay 24/7 for, in the chance that they might play your favorite films. DVDs are still very much relevant as you own your film forever and only pay for it once, and not every Month. No apps or Wi-Fi, - good. The less features in the unit to clutter the operation of the player, the less likely for it to break down. Most smart TVs today have plenty of apps and that is fine for people that can afford to pay extra for them. No need to clutter the player with them, as for Wi-Fi people can look for a model that supports it, but for people with pacemakers the less Wi-Fi signals, the better as these signals can interfere with pacemakers. It is a very good DVD player that delivers well on it's basic function.
