Elastic cartilage is a type of cartilage which contains elastic fibres in addition to the collagenous fibres in its matrix and perichondrium. It is also called yellow cartilage because of its yellow appearance. It is present in the parts which do not bear much load. This type of cartilage also consists of several cells in lacunae.
Elastic cartilage differs from hyaline cartilage, only because of the presence of the enormous amount of yellow elastic fibres in the matrix. Elastic Cartilage examples include external ear (pinna), epiglottis, and auditory (Eustachian) tube in the human body.

Elastic connective tissue has collagen fibres in its main matrix element. It is different from white fibrous ones in that fibres are loosely and irregularly arranged. It is a vital component of our body’s structure. It is present in various organs and provides essential support and adaptability.
The fibroblasts which secrete the yellow elastic fibres are scattered randomly throughout the matrix and very few collagen fibres are found. The yellow fibres provide the tissues elasticity and flexibility and the collagen fibres the tensile strength. The tissue is located in ligaments, walls of arteries, lungs, and air passages.
