The Perfect Run

The Perfect Run is the second mission of the Grandmaster Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port, and is subsequently the final mission of the game. This mission can only be played after two conditions have been met: the player needs to have collected the Comet Medal from the previous mission and the player needs to have 9,999 Star Bits stored with the Banktoad (or in the Nintendo Switch version, have 9,999 Star Bits on hand). It is not necessary to have fulfilled the 9,999 Star Bits requirement when completing The Ultimate Test, and doing so once permanently sets the flag to unlock the level for all save file slots that have completed the other requirements.^{[1][better source needed]} Completing both conditions will cause the Prankster Comet to appear, allowing the player to play the mission. Music from Super Mario Galaxy also plays during this mission, including the themes of Gusty Garden Galaxy (for the first three areas), Good Egg Galaxy (next two), Bowser's Galaxy Reactor (Hammer Bro planets), and the Comet Observatory (final planet). In the Nintendo Switch version, the Sky Station Galaxy theme is also played when the player reaches the platform with the Launch Star at the end of the Pull Star area; however this was removed in version 1.3.0.

Mission[edit]

This mission layout is mostly identical to that of The Ultimate Test. However, the player has to do the mission with only one hit point and with no Checkpoint Flags, meaning the player starts at the very beginning of the mission if they take damage. The planets and areas mostly remain the same, with the only major differences being Choppahs and additional Space Mines added to the first area. If the player manages to defeat the Boomerang Bros. at the end, a Launch Star will appear that will send the player to the final area, where the player will meet with Rosalina, who rewards them with the final Power Star. Afterwards, Rosalina can be found on Starship Mario.

Under normal gameplay, the player will always complete the mission in the Cloud form, as it is required to complete one section of the mission. It cannot be lost because that requires either taking damage, which will defeat the player, or touching water, of which there is none in the mission.

In the Nintendo Switch version's Assist Mode, if the player loses a life, they will restart from the end of the previous section. For example, losing a life on the Hammer Bro Planets will restart the player from the Launch Star in the Pull Star Area. Because of this, it is now possible to complete the mission under normal gameplay while not in the Cloud form.
