The shield volcano that made the Warrumbungle Range was active about 13-17 million years ago.

The volcano had a roughly circular outcrop 50 km in diameter, but is now heavily eroded and dissected, with prominent sub-volcanic dykes (Duggan 1989).

The Warrumbungles are located in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia. The nearest town is Coonabarabran.
