Located 3.2 km east of Mundijong. The mine is just north of the old Mundijong-Jarrahdale railway line, as it cuts through the Darling Range Foothills. It is on private property and not accessible without permission. Some sources state little remains although the local rock club has visited the site, and obtained some ugly lumps of galena. An interesting shale formation can be found in a cutting along the railway line.
While the Geraldine Mine at Ajana is the first mine in Western Australia, with recorded production, the Mundijong lead-zinc prospect was the first mine developed in Western Australia. It was opened in 1846, under the supervision of early Western Australian geologist, Ferdinand Von Sommer.
It was worked again in 1870 when a few tonnes of massive galena was extracted. It was active 1905-1908, by the Mundijong Silver and Lead Mining Company. Pictures show a couple of wooden buildings, shaft, and trenches along the side of a steep hill. The mine was active again in 1926. While considerable work was undertaken to sink shafts and drives, no commercial ore was ever reported produced from the deposit.
The writer of the reference (Blockley) visited the site in the 1970's, only to find the local farmer had filled in the shafts, and spread the dumps about the paddocks.
It is a north-south lode tested to 100 feet. Galena is found in fair sized bunches near the surface, with sphalerite near the water level. Deeper the two ores are disseminated in small quantities in quartz veins, with small quantities of copper. The ore forms a pipe like shoot.
Ferguson states the deposit is found in granite gneiss, amphibolite, and mica schist, with quartz veins dipping steeply north-east. The largest vein has significant Pb-Zn at its northern end, however the rest of the vein system covering 490 metres is virtually barren. Contains galena and sphalerite, with lesser pyrite and fluorite. Single shaft with three levels but only to 22 metres he states.
