Pioneer mining district


The Pioneer district, centred on the town of Pioneer, was a major producer of tin (cassiterite) in alluvial deposits along the Ringarooma River. Good specimens of sapphire, spinel and zircon also occur in the deposits. The largest deposit, the Pioneer mine, is now flooded and known as the a Pioneer dam.
