A former open pit Cr mine situated within the state line serpentine belt, on the eastern side of Octararo Creek, 1ยฝ miles SW of Nottingham (Harve de Grace 9228), exploiting associated deposits of chromite (rock mining/massive).

Records at the time of the 2nd Geological Survey, 1875 list total production of approximately 3,000 tons. According to Pearre and Heyl (1960), other sources list 6,000 tons.

As shown on Figure 23 of Smith and Barnes (1998) of aerial photograph AHD-4D-174 taken on November 18, 1946, the Scott Mine was located in what is now the north central sector of Nottingham County Park, Chester County, PA. This is consistent with the more generalized location shown as location 80, Plate 41 of Pearre and Heyl (1960). Further confirmation occurred just prior to 6/17/2003 when the plug in the Scott Mine shaft collapsed following heavy rains. In addition to the open vertical shaft, R. C. Smith, II observed an incline trending N37E +/- 3 from the shaft. Smith's GPS coordinates taken at this time were: 39 44 26.8N, 76 02 31.6W +/- 20 feet. This is about 2.4 km southeast of Octoraro Creek. Pearre and Heyl (1960, P. 779-780) described the complex of workings at the Scott Mine area. Elsewhere, they also summarize the history.

What appears to have been the main Scott Mine shaft plunges to the SSE. In addition to the shaft there was a 35 foot wide by 98 foot long 1945-vintage exploration trench extending just south of east from the shaft. A second, smaller shaft having a 50-foot long N50W trending trench is located 90 feet northeast of the main shaft. This smaller shaft might be William Scott's second shaft which drained into the first shaft.
