Limonitic iron ore has been mined and refined in Niger since 3000 B.C. The ore was transported to wooded areas and reduced with charcoal in furnaces made out of mud bricks, so-called "banco". This tradition stopped only in the 20th century when there was increasingly no wood left to produce charcoal. In some regions of Mali, iron is still occasionally produced this way.
Remnants of iron ore smelting activities are found abundantly all over West Africa.
