Small island formerly linked to the northern Crozon peninsula by a sandy isthmus.

The Île Longue is partly a limestone island as the Île Ronde situated north-east from there (Victor-Eugène Ardouin-Dumazet).

Microgranite quarries were exploited all around the island for cobblestones (18th-19th centuries).

Since 1967, the island has been gradually concreted to become the operational base of the French strategic ocean force.
