The mine was first opened in 1880, and in the following three years 300 tons of apatite was mined.
Several openings have been made on it; the most important is a pit twenty-five feet in depth, sunk on a mixed vein of apatite and pyroxene, intersected by small veins of pink calcite. This vein having a N.E. and S.W. course and varying in width from six to sixteen feet can be traced into the next lot, where, however, the pyroxene is replaced by calcite, often enclosing immense crystals of apatite and orthoclase.
