A former Cu-Au-Ag occurrence/mine located in the NW¼SE¼NW¼ sec. 22 & in sec. 27, T15N, R14E, SBM, about 6.0 km SSE of Kokoweef Peak (summit) (8½ miles NE of Mountain Pass). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in limestone, quartzite and granitic gneiss. The ore body strikes N and dips 70E. The Hillside claim is in an oxidized, pulverized fault zone with quartzite and limestone on the E and sheared granitic gneiss on the W. The oxide workings are in a Cu-stained gouge zone between granitic rock on the E and limestone on the W. On the Cuprite claim, an Fe-silica-bearing zone forms a bold outcrop on a granite-limestone contact. Copper occurs in both the sulfide and carbonate forms. Associated rocks include Late Cretaceous - Late Permian monzonite. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert and Transverse Ranges) and/or Cambrian marine rocks.
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 41.15 meters. There are 3 groups of workings on the Hillside claim: 1) a 20 foot tunnel and a 25 foot winze that opens into an E-W stope 40 by 15 by 20 feet; 2) ½ mile W, the oxide workings with a main shaft 135 feet deep, inclined 55W with several 40 to 50 foot drifts totaling 200 feet, and a 30 foot vertical shaft. There are several shallow shafts and a short tunnel on the Cuprite claim.
Production data are found in: Wright, L.A., et al (1953).
Several hundred tons of Ag-Au-Cu ore were obtained during the period 1925 to 1940. A small additional tonnage of ore was shipped during 1947 and 1949.
Analytical data results: 8 to 20% Cu.
