Jean-Baptiste L. Romé de l'Isle
Formula:
A2(Sb5+)2O6Z
Lustre:
Sub-Adamantine, Vitreous, Greasy
Name:
The roméite group has its name after the generic name roméite which was first introduced in 1841 by Augustin Alexis Damour in honor of Jean Baptiste Louis Romé de L'Isle [August 26, 1736, Gray, Haute-Saône, France - July 3, 1790, Paris, France], the "father of crystallography". He was first an officer in the French Army and he developed the science of crystallography while he was a private curator for wealthy collectors of coins, minerals, etc.
Sb-dominant members of the Pyrochlore Supergroup.

The nomenclature was recently revised by Atencio et al. (2010); see also Christy & Atencio (2013).

AtopiteStibiconite Group . It is probably identical with "roméite," but contains sodium in substitution for calcium and contains fluorine, unlike roméite in its older definition. Palache et al. (1951) considered it a Na-bearing variety of roméite. Compare fluo...
BismutostibiconiteOriginally described by Walenta (1983). The chemical data are considered inadequate owing to a standardless energy-dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), with all Sb assumed to be pentavalent, and results of the analysis normalised to 100%. It probably is “bism...
MauzeliiteA Pb-bearing variety of "roméite." Compare oxyplumboroméite.

Originally reported from Jakobsberg Mine, Nordmark, Filipstad, Värmland, Sweden.
Schneebergite (of Brezina)Stibiconite Group . An Fe-bearing variety of roméite.

Formerly the name "schneebergite" was used by Brezina in 1880 to describe a new calcium antimonate phase discovered at the Monteneve Mine (Schneeberg Mine) in Tyrol. Later Zedlitz in 1932 proved it t...
WeslieniteStibiconite Group . A F-bearing variety of "roméite" containing a considerable amount of fluorine in substitution for oxygen. Compare fluorcalcioroméite.
